But it was freely offered. So taking it doesn't break the precept. ;)
  • Are we talking about Science? :)

I'm not sure what point the OP is making.

    It's a response to faith-based people.
  • @Dakini So true! I'm stealing it! Oops, I mean....Yes, I will accept that. :)

May I assume that includes faith-based Buddhists.

Dare I say that no person that ever attained enlightenment had proof.

Could you expand on your statement?

I guess what most people want as proof is either some irrefutable scientific study or something solid they can touch or see.

How can someone show anyone else the state of their mind? It could be inferred but that rarely is enough for anyone demanding proof.
  • Wisdom can take form of insight that can sometimes only be explained through parables.

But I think that is one reasonable definition of "proof".

    For me it is.

What person is saying, I think, is that subjective experience can't possibly be accepted as objective proof. Witness our threads on the paranormal.

    I agree.

That's why I am failing to see the intent of the OP.

I'm not upset about it. I just don't get it.

Ok, so respond to this in terms of the purpose of this thread.

The Buddhist scriptures are the exact teachings of Buddha.

For me its kind of irrelevant. I try to go off of what is reasonable in the teachings and use my own understanding. Even if a teaching could be directly tied to the Buddha if it didn't make sense and wasn't reasonable I doubt I'd give it much mind.

Like that elaborate cosmology, for example. Multiple hot and cold hells, etc.

To my mind scientific proof isn't the same as reasonable. There is a lot about the universe that we don't know. So the teachings about cosmology are reasonable and coherent in a self contained way. If it could be shown somehow that life on earth is all the life there is in the universe I may change my mind but to come to that conclusion based on our current knowledge is quite unreasonable to me.

I've seen enough and experienced enough of the truth in Buddhism that I'm willing to give the rest at least the benefit of the doubt for now.

Humor is often difficult to relay on the internet...as I've often proven!

    :D

It helps to flag it, like with a "haha", or a goofy face, or a sign: "IRONY!". It often takes extra effort to convey humor in the written medium.
