Awesome documentary: - Money As Debt

  • It is easier to be peniless on purpose than to be rich and famous on purpose.

But a lot harder to actively aspire to be so.

I've often found myself somewhat envious of people like this or at the odd homeless hippy kid for the kind of freedom they have. Not envious enough though since I still have a job and a condo.

Eh kinda. I really dislike the gutterpunk scene in places like New Orleans, though. They are free to live how they want of course. But they are dirty, and very inconsiderate, and fucking ruin everything. I cannot walk ten feet there without stumbling across a group of them panhandling outside of a convenience store, obviously drunk or intending to get drunk. They surround you and just beg and beg and beg and will not take "no" for an answer. I mean they get physical about it if they sense any weakness in you. I tell them straight up that if they do not move, I will be forced to move them myself.

I am not threatening them, I am simply making my intentions clear. They usually get the picture and back off. But every now and then you need to get physical yourself. And since a majority of them are rather weak-willed, scrawny, and... dare I say impish. A shove or two quickly sends the group scattering. In the rare event they try to bum-rush you, as long as you are decently sized and know how to throw a punch they lose their confidence rather quickly. Considering they do not know how to handle themselves in a confrontation and have glass jaws.

Normally I would not be so unforgiving with beggars, normally I lend them a hand out of genuine care. But I am tired of being cornered, shoved around and poked at, hassled, and pickpocketed (it has happened more than once) So again if they get in my face, I give them very stern warnings and make my intentions perfectly clear, and that I am perfectly willing to get a little bloody if need be to defend myself and my wallet.

  • This is the life :) It truley is. Have you not experienced NB members when you have money (and I do not refer to being able to eat and pay the rent, that is standard), but when you have money to buy things, to indulge, have you not felt the suffering and problems that arise, have you not observed this?

    Goodness. :(
  • There is a difference between a person like this and people forcefully begging. I think this guy is awesome, something I once dreamt of was moving to Montana (one of the most uninhabited place in the US, in theory) and just being.
I would describe this guy as a survivalist more than a beggar. Though I tend to have some compassion for beggars (I don't give money though, only food or clothing). Who knows with this economy I maybe one out there some day too, trying to make sure my kid has food and a roof.
