Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Poised to Win Parliamentary Seat

edited April 2012 in Buddhism Today
This is great news, but I hope history doesn't repeat itself. She's won an election before, and we all know what happened since then. Thankfully, she was released from house arrest after almost two decades and Thein Sein even opened up a direct dialogue with her.

Of course, her election would only be symbolic - albeit a very powerful one. As the article points out, "Suu Kyi's party and its opposition allies will have almost no sway even if they win all the seats they are contesting, because the 664-seat parliament will remain dominated by the military and the military-backed ruling party. But when Suu Kyi takes office, it will symbolize a giant leap toward national reconciliation after nearly a quarter-century in which she spent most of her time under house arrest. It could also nudge Western powers closer to easing economic sanctions they have imposed on the country, which is also known as Myanmar, for years."

At any rate, this would be a very positive step forward for Burma if she is elected and allowed to take office.
