Free Writing

Hs anyone here ever done 'free-writing'? It is where you get a pen and some paper and just write without thinking about what you are writing. I was wondering why is this done or of any experiences with doing it? Yes, just a really random question I know

  • Free writing has these benefits:

It makes you more comfortable with the act of writing.
It helps you bypass the "inner critic" who tells you you can't write.
It can be a valve to release inner tensions.
It can help you discover things to write about.
It can indirectly improve your formal writing.
    It can be fun.

Just found this on the internet but there's much more info out there. Sounds fun, just writing without giving it any thought. I would think that getting started might be a bit difficult though. In my case it would stopping ;)

Free writing sounds like a formalized version of what I do in writing as a matter of course -- barf and correct, barf and correct, barf and correct.

Exactly, lol. I don't know when it happened, but this afternoon, I suddenly found myself on the cusp of writing the last scene in my novel... the novel that has consumed much of the last year. THE LAST SCENE GUYS. My hands started sweating uncontrollably and I'm suddenly feeling a little nervous. Heeh. I needed a NB break.

If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.

Yeh, but then I'd look at the painting and that voice would start up again and say, 'See, I was right!"

    :p

I wonder if Tom was talking about that thing that was popular circa 1918, where psychics would do 'free writing' to get messages from dead people? Contacting the dead was popular after WW1.

HA! Expectations are ruining it for you LOL! He didn't say 'masterpiece', nor even 'good'... just do it if you want to. For some it's about the process :) - thinking, deciding, choosing, finding.....

  • @Tosh you are nearly bang on with your thought, I was leaning more towards the paranormal side of it. Not that I have any belief in it, I was just curious about what it was and if anybody had ever done it, and what became of the experience.

It's used a lot for people with mental trauma, like victims or witnesses of extreme violence, or those with PTSD....
Writers use it a lot to unblock "Writer's block" too.. rather as mentioned above by ZG....
