Another question about malas (sorry) cord for small holes???

edited April 2012 in Buddhism Basics
Thanks for all the replys and info on my other thread, but this time I was wondering if someone can point out a website that sells good cord to use for making mala...I like semi precious stones...almost allways the ones like you find at craft stores or bead shops have them, BUT the holes drilled through them are very tiny. I make my own mala beads and use nylon coated stainlees steel wire, and finish it with a basic tassel made of cotton.
I would like to start using cord instead so i can do a beaded tassel (the two strands hanging down from the guru bead with 10 beads on each strand) or do the snake knot end. Obviosly this kind of thing simply will not work with wire and looks horrible with wire showing.
I know that its fairly easy to string a mala made out of wood or bodhi seeds as they have much larger holes drilled through and different cords are easy to find....But Id like cord for super small holes.
Please help point me in the right direction.

Thank you very much!

Namaste

I'd like to know too. I have tigerseye beads for a mala but I used fishing line and every few months it would break, maybe a thicker gauge?
  • thicker gauge lasts a bit longer but another reason I really want cord is because It simply is never done with wire by traditonal standards...good point, person and I are talking about beads such as tigers eye, black onyx, and beads of that sort. Again, Super tiny holes. Please help us!!

Do a search for Chinese knotting cord (nylon). I've purchased it through ebay in the past and have been quite happy as to the colors available as well as the various thicknesses.

1mm is a good general size, but if you have a large bead, say 10mm or larger, I'd use a 1.5mm or perhaps a 2mm cord.

Here's a good example of what's available in the smaller sizes:
  • thanks bonsai! I found that same companies website and just ordered a sample card of each color from 0.44 mm to 1mm for only 5 dollars. now I can see what size will work the best, kudos to you my friend
