Titanic Shmitanic

Enough about the Titanic already... Hundreds of ships sink and have sunk.. big ones, tragically... even ships that looked just like the Titanic, like the Lusitania, that made just as big a headline in its day. The Titanic's sister ship Olympia sailed on for twenty years before being retired. The same damn ship.. getting old and creaky.

The media here all aflutter over the Titanic... there are people gathering for "somber"ceremonies in Halifax marking the 100 anniversary... people with no connection to that particular foundering gathering in tears?!?!... Television specials, forensic descriptions of how it broke up.. etc. In 1994 almost a thousand people died in the sinking of the Estonia, no one even knows about it...... thousands of people die every year in ferry sinkings all around the world.... anonymous. Oy.

sorry.. just need to rant.

Yea, but let's not forget about Celine Dion singing "My heart will go on"!
  • More power to them. Get out their emotions.

I see what you're saying though.

  • The movie is amazing.

James cameron is good at manipulation.

I even shed a tear. Very samsaric.

The ship sank great... but it turns out it didn't rear up in such a cinematic fashion.. but just slumped over and sank. I was moved too.. it was a tragedy. Cameron copies the earlier British film "A night to remember" almost scene by scene... even shot by shot. Then he added the romantic story.

It's all interesting.. Ships are interesting... in 1860 the 700ft steamer "Great Eastern" was build by a flamboyant character named Brunel.. 50 years before Titanic. I build models of battleships... working slowly on both the Bismark and the King George the 5th..

My point is not that the Titanic story isn't an interesting and poignant part of marine history... Only that it has become a MegaMeme.. with a life..including an emotional life.. of it's own, detached from all historical perspective. On the national news here today it lead all day.

  • ahh..... two chord Gord.

I understand, Richard. I can't relate to all the fuss, either. The one interesting article I read about it dealt with unusual oceanic and atmospheric conditions that caused the ship to be hidden by mist and mirage from another ship nearby that could have rescued everyone. The science involved in that was interesting.

  • Lol..vinlyn is a fan!
Geez, OP, if you're not interested, just don't watch.
  • My favorite part was the only line a sailor extra had and said to the new money mistress who wanted to turn the raft for the people screaming in the water...

"They'll be one less person on this boat if YOU DONT SHUT THAT 'OLE IN YOUR FACE!! "

My favorite part was when Leo held Kate by the arms at the front of the boat and made her feel like she was flying..swoon!

Yeah man they went a bit overboard on the effects I think
  • You shouldn't be eating chicken nuggets...ummm gross!
Why, they were homemade...I coat them in butter and eggs and roll them in bread crumbs. They're not from McDonald's.
I cook 90% of the time. I even bake my own bread.

    Back to Titanic!
  • ahhh ok. You're forgiven........
  • Haha the Benny Hill theme is pretty good. Have to FB this.
  • Titanic is the new "twilight"...

It will be over as soon as the teen screams die into another trend...

...ah, hunger games? Feather extensions? Crackled Polish...

I have no teens why do I know this?! I'm going to take a vow of silence and hide in my cave for the next year...
I'm still angry they cancelled "Buffy the vampire slayer."

yes but this ship was built in my home town.
I met a old bloke in a pub many years ago, somewhere out in the sticks, north of Carrickfergus, who claimed that he was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic.

He was a rivetter at the Belfast ship yards; never put the last rivet in, did he!

I swear that's true (as least the story of him claiming to have been responsible).

The romantic story is the best part! I admit, I saw that movie when I was 13 and I totally bawled my eyes out for like ten minutes straight.

....and then I just cried again. Dangit. What can I say? Kate Winslet is amazing in that film.
  • Lol...
U cried thinking Leonardo would leave you forever...

I just hate heartbreaking movies. I'm a lesbian, so it was never a personal thing with Leonardo DiCaprio (although I admit he's a pretty good actor, especially now). Like I said, Kate Winslet really sells the scene for me.

I read recently she almost drowned making one of those scenes, where the water is rushing in, and she's trapped in steerage.

  • Enough about the Titanic already...
Indeed. Much more important is the fact that on the 50th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking *I* was born (do the math). :)
  • I build models of battleships...
Another modeler! I think we should start www.buddhistmodeler.com :) After all, there's already a Christian modeling site (www.agapemodels.com). Never been able to discern the real connection between Christianity and building models of warplanes and tanks and ships, unless you go back and look at the history of Christianity. I'm sure the irony of that connection is utterly lost on the guy who runs the site though. :)

He calls me sunny because I hop fences to lay out in private pools on private property and finding any reason to do so...oh, and I lick door knobs for the hell of it...wait, that had nothing to do with it. Omit..

Yes, there is an online version, so I will read it over the next few days.

  • I didn't know these fairy tales existed...I recommended the other one too...if you are too lazy you can find the play on YouTube.

If you have other fairy tales, please let me know.

Don't listen to Tom, I am only a small percentage (like 10% insane) ... but it's mostly harmless to others.

  • "Mostly harmless to others" Better watch out Alison is about :eek2: Only pulling your chain, we all know that you are eccentric, not insane. Well, we assume so..
  • I haven't visited the twisted kingdom since January 2012, thank you very much!

Eccentric is probably a nicer way of saying it. Thank you, Tom. Be careful vinlyn, I'll suck you into my madness...through the looking glass, where my world is nonsense.
  • By the way, that is me in the photo, I cannot lie. I got a job as a boating operator for a small business-man on a fishing lake. He for some reason wanted me to that type of underwear, but the pay was good and it is hot so ...
