I have been studying the difference between, what would be defined as carelessness and what would be defined as accidental. Apologies I am a trained social scientist, and love to over analyse things ... !!

With reference to this scenario I found myself in, would you consider it to be a case of carelessness or a mere accident? Just a one word answer would be hugely appreciated.

I have not yet taken the fifth precept and still smoke a little, mainly socially .... I was with some friends and normally use matches, as lighters sometimes hurt my fingers, especially when my hands are cold. A girl, I don’t know particularly well, simply handed me her lighter (out of kindness). I took it out of politeness ... and tried to carefully light it without harming myself ... but it still it hurt my finger a little ....

Was this harm inflicted by carelessness or a mere accident?

I would be so appreciative of anything from a one word response :-)

:)

Sorry, not one word, but short.

    1. You said: "I am a trained social scientist, and love to over analyse things ... !!" You'll fit right in here! ;)

    2. Now that I think of it, I/you just answered your question.

You deliberately accepted the risk, so it’s not a mere accident.
You weren’t careless either. You must have thought something was worth taking the risk. Your pride?

There’s less pain in burning your fingers than in looking silly.

    Now I’m over analyzing surely.

    accidental.
    smoking is 'care-less'.

Care-less. You have a precious human body you should look after it and not create the causes for a painful death.

You said you tried to take care to use the lighter without harming yourself. So how could the action have been careless?

However, smoking is heedlessness, carelessness, self-harm. But you knew that.

    The difference lies in intent..?

That is, you intended to use the lighter properly, but still got hurt. I'd say that's an "accident." But if you didn't have any intent to do anything and got hurt, it's "careless" because you didn't intend to not get hurt or to get hurt. That's just what I think... i think...

    I'm getting confused... lol

I think accidents are caused by carelessness.

Neither. It must come down to a lack of co-ordination or inexperience in handling cigarette lighters. Those things are designed to be used by anyone except children.
I'm wondering how you have avoided serious injury from holding a burning cigarette up to your face.
