  • It's from the Mahayana Vinaya, the 10th sutra of the collection if I recall correctly.

I found some extra information about this sutra.

This sutra is the #600 in the Taisho Tripitaka (Chinese Canon) and also is called The Sutra On The Ten wholesome Ways Of Action.

Some interesting is that in the version that I have of the sutra, the Buddha is teaching to the Naga King, but the other versions on-line said that was to the Dragon King. :)

    So it's apocryphal....

It's really more related to the geographical location than anything else. For example, in China and other countries you'll find the dragon because the naga them merged with local folklore and tradition --- this doesn't really seem to have been the case throughout most of India, where the snake form perminates the cultural heritage and just about every religious tradition, just not Buddhism.

    So it's apocryphal....
Well, I don't know. Is part of the Chinese canon but not from the Pali canon.
I can' t tell if apocryphal apply here (or in any buddhism sutra IMHO :) )
  • Canonical, non-canonical, apocryphal, ect., or any other label tossed around, at least it's not a prize someone found at the bottom of a Crackerjack Box :)
