Somewhere over the rainbow

zombiegirlzombiegirl beating the drum of the lifelessin a dry wasteland Veteran
edited May 2012 in General Banter
I am in love with this version by the late IZ. It makes me feel simultaneously happy and touched and sad all at the same time. It always makes me cry though, lol. Usually when he gets to the "What a wonderful world" part.
I'm currently learning to play it on the ukulele. :)

Just thought I'd share.

A couple of years ago my Son got married barefoot on the beach in Hawaii. This was their wedding song. A truly great rendition.

I listen to this song often as a nice shot of hope. My favorite lyric is
"Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me ee ee eeh
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops thats where you'll find me oh"

It reminds me that things can change and that there's a better life out there somewhere.

The ukulele doesn't help to illustrate proportions either hehe. Nice song though, as soon as I read the title the song was inplanted in my head! :buck:

He also appears to be using the smallest variety of ukulele (Soprano). I've seen him pictured with larger, but that's all I see him with in that video. I like it though because it seems like all of the serious ukulele enthusiasts seem to upgrade to the larger versions, but I kind of like the natural tinny sound of the smaller ones, even though mine is the next size up (Concert).

These are the uke chords in case there's any other uke players.

@BonsaiDoug I can totally picture that song for that. That sounds beautiful.

I also really liked seeing part of his funeral in the video. Everyone seems so joyous and celebratory, I wish more funerals were like that... celebrating a person's life instead of hating their death.
  • I had forgotten about this version of the song. Thank you!

Agree. I've witnessed a traditional Hawaiian funeral like the one celebrating IZ's life, and it is a very joyous occasion. It's more about the joy the individual brought into others' lives than a weeping and gnashing of teeth regretting their passing on. Sort of a big thank-you-for-being-in-my-life send off.
  • I've always loved this version, it's been an inspiration in my life. I'm moving to Maui in less than 2 weeks.
