Jeff Lieberman on science and spirituality

DaltheJigsawDaltheJigsaw Mountain View Veteran
edited May 2012 in General Banter
Jeff Lieberman, an MIT-trained artist, scientist and engineer, makes a scientific argument for mystical experience. He asks us to challenge our perception of what we are, our relationship to the universe, and our relationship to one another. Our minds are "thought-generating machines." What we would happen if we could turn off the machine? If we could transcend our individual experience of the world?

  • Interesting talk. I think his ideas on energy are unnecessary though.
  • Interesting Leon, thanks for posting. Some minor things I am not 100% certain onb but they are pretty trivial things such we are moving at the speed of light and we are the only organism able to become anxious about the future etc.

A helpful talk to try to get people to look beyond the world of the senses to see that reality is more than what we think and sense and done in a language that most westerners can digest.

I mentioned this not long ago on here, but I think the Dalai Lama has been working for a long time now to bring science to the East, and not so much the East to science. He has been building a bridge and both sides are coming closer together.

Correction, it might be awesome that a scientist is jumping on the bandwagon, but it in no way implies that science is --- dialectics 101 :)

  • Agree with Dharmakara.

Also science and buddhism (at least how i understand buddhism) deal fundamentally with different aspects of reality.
