"All advice is simply advice people give to themselves."

What do you think?

If a child comes and asks me what to do because s/he has fallen over, and I say here, get some antiseptic and wipe it over and let's bandage it -- is that the same?

Could be something to it; in some situations.
And why do we express opinions?
Maybe we try to silence our own doubts when we express our opinions.
The bigger the doubt, the louder we get.
  • It depends.. Sometimes it is a self centered thing, or even an ego game. Sometimes it is a spontaneous, compassionate and genuinely helpful act.. not a self centered thing at all.

    @RichardH

    I agree with you.

I've caught myself defending myself, etc and getting worked up. That was just ego.

True advice only happens when there is communion. It's like a heart to heart connection. Afterwards one is just in shock because one is confused that those wise words can come out.

Real advice comes from the wise heart. Almost like a painting or a song.

But I would have to say that most rambling I do is to convince myself.

    True

But so what, I hate contrarian questions like this :aol:

There is some truth to it. Here is a better version:
Some advice is simply advice people give to themselves.

If it's actually good advice, then why does it matter? Everyone, including oneself, would benefit from following good advice!

All advice is recycled wisdom. We hand it down, pass it along, change the format, and alter its appearance - but upon scrutiny, we've heard it all before.

    Example:
"Actions speak louder than Words" has become "Walk the Talk."

    case in point though.
We wouldn't need so much advice recycled, handed down and passed along - if we heeded it in the first place.

True, like how we keep 'honoring' war victims and then keep making wars..

I agree with @federica ... if we heeded the advice we impart, we would probably have a lot more time to talk about something important ... like stamp collecting or the number of bristles on a tooth brush, perhaps. :)

There is advice that is recycled wisdom, maybe even sound bites like your example.. There is also the advice that is not recycled, that is particular to a situation...and does not fit into a template. There is also a big difference between unsolicited advice and advice that is asked for in confidence.
