How to get interviews with religious leaders?

I'm going to be minoring in Film when I transfer to my new university and I'm putting together an idea for a small documentary; and it involves interviewing religious leaders on social and spiritual issues. As well as comparing their differences on such.

Christians I can probably get interviews with quite easily, but how should I go when asking interviews from Muslims, Irish Traveler/Gypsy Catholics, Hindus, Mennonites, etc.?

Would it better to call and ask, inquire by e-mail or visit their place of worship and ask in person?

As a former news reporter I would suggest that there are all sorts of ways to skin a cat. Try 'em all. Be a pest. Keep knocking on the door. And, to the extent you want to make a good documentary, lose the kow-towing. Respect? Sure. Assuming the topic or its subjects deserve more by the nature of their profession ... don't do that unless propaganda and swooning are your object.
