"Desiderata"

I had occasion to look this up again today and thought it might be worth posting here:

DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

    Beautiful...

    Apparently in the original, it ends with "Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." instead of "Be careful" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desiderata).

    Both are good teachings though, imo.

    I see what you're saying.

    He has one connection.

    Others have other connections. I'm just saying the piece, in and of itself, is not directly related to hippiedom.
  • semantics.
    SithePi was talking about his own original connection to the piece, not its significance in being posted here now.
    Precisely.

    Just to be clear, I did the OP with the notion that, as mission statements go, the "Disiderata" is pretty good.

    Attention all:
    Times of posting totally foo-bah-ed.....

    @Lincoln - can you explain...?
  • Oh joy! Hippiedom returns. But should we be surprised? As in the 1960s, we are losing a foreign war, unsure of our economic and labour future and fed up to the back teeth with the capitalist myth. What could be better than "Make love, not war"?

    Kind of a knee-jerk response. Max Ehrmann -- first note when he wrote it, 1927 -- was hardly a product a hippiedom. He was a product of the conservative midwest American-German culture. Though liberal, the hardly hippie Adlai Stevenson was known to be appreciative of the writing.

    I can't find much to criticize in the writing.

    Not in the slightest. The text was printed and subsequently widely distributed in 1962.
    Hence the hippiedom reference.

    ^ I understand that, but I also doubt that the OP was reprinting it to refer to hippiedom. And everything that came out on radio and the media in that time frame wasn't exactly hippiedom -- that particular recording got wide airplay on middle of the road music stations.
