today morning these came into 'my' mind

'why don't people go to a goldsmith and ask for a gold coin which is caved with five rings like olimpic symble?'
why bother to gain a gold medal at olimpic?

the reason is Greed for fame
(individual greed from the person and collective greed from the country)

we can go more deeper than this answer but it is better left for readers to dive and see :)

@upekka, if you believe that this is what the Olympics is about, I think you may be observing through just one tiny angle.
Today there was a good example of sportsmanship and fair play.
Today was all about the true spirit of sportsmanship and cutting across barriers.
Not everything is about greed and fame.

I think the Olympics are a good thing. It keeps us from being even more segregated as nations than we already are. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are self-serving in their Olympic quests, but there are thousands of athletes in the olympics, most of whom never get a medal, and know they don't stand a chance at a medal yet they go anyways. I have far more respect for most Olympians than I do for the $25MM US baseball players who'll sink their team just so they can have a good salary. The Olympics has good lessons to offer if you are listening.

    True

why i said 'what i said'
because i stop just looking but started to listen too

but i am at the beginning stage of the 'listening'

    @federica
    what exactly 'everything' ?

    :)
  • The Olympics are supposed to celebrate all countries and continents coming together, to compete in a fair way, without any hostility. After all, the Olympic rings represents the world's continents, they are connected, united and very symbolic of our foreign relations.

    @federica
    what exactly 'everything' ?
"Things are not always what they seem; nor are they otherwise."
    (Surangama Sutra).
  • His father runs the temple and also the adjacent horse riding club. His brother and sister also compete. Don't confuse the Japanese system of married monks with the traditional celebate monk confined to the temple tradition. It's more like being a married minister here or perhaps a Deacon. In Japan, Buddhist monks can marry and have active lives outside the temple.

I prefer to take his own words as sincere in the interview. He seems like a nice young man.
  • He'd prefer enlightenment to a medal, but when Japan's horse-riding Buddhist monk Kenki Sato saddles up for London 2012, he'll be representing one of the Olympics' more unusual families.

Pretty lame way to start that article..

just my 2% of a dollar.

    :D

  • I think that's awesome! Best of luck to him.

I like the Olympics. I don't watch them or anything but I support the general idea

They were desperate for a story! ;)

A much better line would have been - "Keep Satori - give me 'satorial' elegance in the equestrian event any day!"

    Maybe that's pushing it..... :D

"While in Cape Town on a local tour to play against South Africa and train for the 2012 London Olympics, the Great Britain Men’s Hockey team asked Pagpa at the Kadampa Center in Cape Town to come and teach them how to meditate. Taking a leaf out of the 2500 year-old Buddhist tradition, they are including meditation as part of their regimen for success. As a side effect, they are also reporting increased happiness and well-being "

Yikes... that is the NKT... I wouldn't ever want to meditate with them.

The Dalai Lama asks that if you do certain practices that they do that you not attend his talks or anything of the sort.

    @OneLifeForm....

Disclosure: I only endorse "....Taking a leaf out of the 2500 year-old Buddhist tradition, they are including meditation as part of their regimen for success. As a side effect, they are also reporting increased happiness and well-being "

WHO teaches you, I have learned is a topic I not only wont endorse, but
I usually run from them. hahaha. Im not touching that!
Who you will meditate with is your business. :)

I am mindfull to use correct resources, credits, etc., for things that
I think the 'general' community here might find interesting or relate
    to the topic.
Apparently, I was'nt 'formally' trained in this practice, so, I
admit, my contributions to a forum are probably not backed by HHDL.

    Yarr

All I could see in what you posted was the organization associated with said meditation. :p

I became mindful of researching such things after doing some research on that one in particular after a friend warned me about it.
A different friend told me that he saw them picketing/protesting outside of where His Holiness the Dalai Lama was giving a teaching one day that my friend was attending.

I think it is good that they are doing some meditation though.. it will probably help them in their sport.

What I posted was just my opinion on all of that, not every member on here supports the same things when it comes to Buddhism.

Forums love opinions. So I agree with you there.
It has been my experience, that most members here support meditation.
    That was my intention.
Also, I have family members near/around Cape Town,
so the references while general, may still hit on another target with someone
else there. We here at NB are world-wide baby !!! haha
Maybe I posted a separate topic in a thread.

thread.....Who is watching? Any favorite moments so far?

Some not-so-favourite ones - like the two badminton teams being disqualified for trying to deliberately lose.... or the Umpire in the ladies' final ping-pong tournament who penalised one player with a red AND yellow card for asking a question to clarify a point....

Michael Phelps is simply incredible though....

Dont you get me started on badminton! Thats the only damn sport I play. lololol
Love it! I was so excited to watch, and then....even the youngest here, 8 said
"why are they hitting the net so much...". Errrrrrr.
Swimming yes, dont you just want to jump in the pool with them? :)
Gymnastics has had a little drama too, as usual. That vault was a 10!!!
Havent watched the ping-pong yet, but now I'm really curious. haha
What are you looking forward to?
  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator
    The closing ceremony.
To be perfectly honest, the scandals are distasteful, but sport in general leaves me absolutely cold.... though I love swimming, and swam long-distance for my school. Couldn't go fast, but my endurance was in a class of its own....

    I hear you.
Seeing the world trying to attempt to come together just fills me
with such hope. I know all the negatives, but, it just seems like it's
the ONLY time so many people of different everythings at least give it
a try! The opening ceremony was amazing, so I agree, Im waiting for
the closings too. Then, my sports consists of badminton in the back yard
and hearing the hubbie shout at the TV at Soccer. :)
  • I was, first flabergasted that such a sport as synchronized diving existed. Swimming, yes. First time I'd seen two people trying to copy each other off the board. It leaves the possibility open for all sorts of synchronized sports. Synchronized broad jump? Synchronized soccer?

And I absolutely love gymnastics, because I've got the grace of a a bull moose, myself. Little Gabby Douglas, the "Flying Squirrel"? She's adorable. Hopping around that bar with so much rosin on her, she looks like a powder puff.

Just watch for the set-ups...Offense...1-2-3....Defense.... Block/Spike.
  • I was riding every twist amd turn on the mens gymnastics high bars this morning, wow the mindset to take them on...

Some bits of the opening ceremony were special, that bit where it changed from rural to industrial landscape with the drumming. And though I'm not a sporty porpoise it's inspiring to watch people with such commitment and skill, especially the ones who make it look easy.

    Not a sporty porpoise? :)

Today I enjoyed Kayaking. The women were fantastic! The control
they have with that water was awesome. My experience was never with
any water that fast, so I really appreciate their steering abilities.

I was most surprised by how much I was glued to the water polo!
It was face paced, and who knew they wrestled under the water? I did'nt. lololol

Im not watching, but paying attention to Boxing because im partial
to Ghana! GO Ghana! My eye balls cant take the violence. haha.
Ready for running! And Ghana is in Judo! So im looking forward to the
    days ahead.

BTW....Did I call the volleyball or what? That men's double today
was tight the entire time. In the sand. Good game!!
  • I have been watching the rowing, the Kiwi men's double team won gold, what a race came from nowhere... I was thinking how much the rowers would be training and racing in the now, every thought on every single stroke.

This made me reflect on the incredible mindset needed for the many hours of solitude constantly training and focusing on there every swim stroke, running step, rowing stroke, bike pedalling to name a few.

My only concern for them would be the suffering they would go thru if they didnt acheive there successful desired outcome, or even if they did achieve they still would want more and more and suffer ... mmmmm

    Yes, taking the frill out.
There has been heartbreaking stories. There is
no doubt in my mind they have sacrificed many hours and
many childhoods. Many athletes are sent away and rarely see their parents.
Did you see the female fencer who needed to be removed from the floor?
As soon as a comp. is over, they are talking
    about 2016. Talk about craving.

    I agree.
