Buddhist "Hell Garden" in Thailand

All right, I was surfing the web and came across this. Just found it fascinating. Buddhism obviously means different things to different people, and here we have the monks at the Wang Saen Suk monastery filling the old donation boxes by building a "Hell Garden" full of statues of people being tortured, mutilated, etc, for their sins.

Such displays, or in other cases paintings, are fairly common in Thailand. I've been to many, although not that particular one.
  • Buddhism in Thailand in general is so far away from where most people would assume it be without visiting or doing vast research. I myself also have never visited this place, maybe I will one day. There are so many Buddhist related 'tourist attractions' though, it would maybe take a lifeime to visit them all.
  • Reminds me of the very frightening demonic figure murals and statues at the entrance to Korean Buddhist temples. They are supposed to be four "Heavenly Kings" trampling demons underfoot. In reality, it's just a really neat thing to see and photograph after being inundated all day long with thousands of serene Buddhas smiling at you.
