Explosive temper and karma

edited September 2012 in Meditation
Let's say a guy experiences murderous rage to the point where he even fantazises about killing the people he hates. Not talking about psychopaths. He may be nice, intelligent, and wonderful, but if desires are not met he becomes a monster. What sort of karma in previous births is involved, because such a person will not be able to meditate or do other Buddhist practices (not saying it is impossible but extremely difficult).

What is the point in trying to figure out the karma of previous lives? That isn't going to help the person meditate or anything else, it's just something that can't be answered that will lead to frustration trying to reason out. It's an exercise in futility for anyone to concern themselves with.

The thing that would help is to figure out the source or cause of that murderous rage, which might require psychiatry sessions. That rage is arising here and now in this life, not in the past.

Why do you think they wouldn't be able to meditate or practise?

Too often the word karma is tossed around as if it is some kind of coverall excuse. Whatever happened or didn't happen in the past is gone and irrelevant to this moment. If the person has issues with managing their temper all the more reason to practise, to understand themselves and the source of these feelings. However overwhelming emotions feel they are not in control unless we let them be.

I've met a nice intelligent and wonderful Psychopath. Psychopaths don't go round wielding knives and frothing at the mouth. They tend to blend fairly well into society as a whole - until they snap.....

Previous Kamma is incalculable and really not worth worrying about; we all have more than enough on our plates, right now, without pondering the imponderable. It's one of the Buddha's Unconjecturables, so it's really best left to one side.
