What is the buddhist way?

I am still new to buddhism but trying a few life changes to better the inner buddha in me. To the point every week i buy a lottery ticket not really for me but for the mrs lol Now this would be seen as gambling coz i am esssentially paying money to try and win a bigger amount even if i do it for someone else. But itmay be said to be a bit of fun i do now that some of the lottery money goes to worth whilse charities one i have volunteered for and it is one of the only time the whole family gather round together laughs and interacts with one another and does the quiz before hand. So what is the way of a buddhist to buy or not to buya lotto ticket.

PS i know it really is a petty question on the grand scale of things but just interested to see your views

I'm a Buddhist who occasionally buys lottery tickets.

I suppose there is some kind of craving for material comfort or security there and I think I remember reading in some dusty corner of Buddhist ethics that gambling is frowned upon.

I think in your case the important point is to be honest and accepting with yourself about why you want to win the lottery and try not to concoct virtous sounding reasons to disguise your true feelings about it.

I buy lottery tickets, on occasion. We spend MAYBE $20 a year on them.

The only thing I personally recall reading was in...the dhammapada maybe? I'll have to look. But it basically said "If you come into a lot of money, use it for what you and your family needs, and then share it."

  • I used to buy lottery tickets, when I cared about material things and planning a future, before I fully realised the buddhist way. Honestly, if I won now I wouldn't know what to do with it. I have a career I enjoy and wouldn't give it up and enough money for the things I need. The only thing that really appeals to me at the moment is the idea of going trekking, somewhere like Nepal, a few £k would do that not a few £M.
