The Life Of Pi

I hesitated to go see this movie because I had an idea that I would be bored by too much fantasy...not to mention being along in a boat with a tiger for 2 hours. Boy was I wrong. A totally impressive film. Truly different. Wondrous photography and special effects. A remarkable performance by a young Indian man who has never been in a film before.

But, there is also some religion mixed into the film. Before the shipwreck, the boy (briefly) investigates Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, and there is even a little Buddhism mixed in. His conclusion -- "Religion is a house with many rooms."

    Looks good! Thank you!
  • I think is a beautiful film I saw it today. In general I am an animal lover so to see the relation of him and the animals is quite gorgeous.

It pissed me off a bit though, that a scene that both my mom and I considered emotional (concerning a fish) people here took it as a joke.
  • I keep missing out on all of these new film releases, I feel like I am detached from modern day western society in a sense. I guess I will remember to download it when it appears as a torrent.

When I read your OP I thought you meant you were alone with a tiger in the cinema for 2 hours (not an actual tiger but someone you consider to be like one), hehe.

I enjoyed both the book and the film for what they were. Definitely worth reading/seeing, in my opinion.

Why? While I lived there most every American film made it to Bangkok, and usually within 2 weeks of the American openings.

  • I don't live in Bangkok and I really do detest the place, it's too chaotic. That being said, there is a half decent cinema close to me but I don't think they play all of the movies that show in the west, some but not all. I just have never felt like going for some reason.. Also I do not hear about most of the new releases as I am not subject to the advertising for them.

  • It opens here in Australia on New Year's eve or day I believe ... my family plan to make it the first film we all see and go together. I enjoyed the book too.

@Wisdom23, I have not read the book, only seen the movie. Even though it would have been a "spoiler", I wish I had known the ending in advance because it would have changed the way I viewed the film. I wonder if others had the same feeling about the book. You can always read the synopsis at Wikipedia, and there is a whole website that explains the implications of the ending.
  • I am looking forward to seeing it, thank you @vinlyn xx
  • Yes, I enjoyed it. Amazing CGI tiger I thought.

Yes, the CGI was amazing. It was difficult to realize it wasn't real.

It's pretty cool how much this line can make you think.

The movie and book were incredible.
  • This was a truly beautiful movie; one of the highlights of the year for me.
  • Maybe in a month of so we can discuss the ending? :p
