The Dharma Gives You Choices
I was meditating yesterday when something struck me, a small realiztion if you will. I was sat there observing my monkey mind as you do, it strayed away over and over only to be brought back again to the breath. Then I saw my mind for what it actually was for a brief period of time and decided to investigate this a little. It seems that the mind is like a machine that is all too often set to 'autopilot'. It reacts as it wishes to stimuli, situations, people and their words etc on its own accord. We think that because we have a mind and consciousness that we are in total control, this in actual fact is quite the opposite for a lot of the time we experience in daily life. I think that one thing meditation does do is that it can enable you to have a choice in the matter when it comes to reacting. Instead of being jammed on autopilot, you can pause, observe what is going on and then decide from there.
This is a handy tool when it comes to the work place I have more recently noted. Yesterday I was ready to blowup as I was overwhelmed with work, our boss was away like he is usually these days and so the two women were downstairs watching a youtube video. I had a client next to me inquiring and instructing me about a design he wanted, all the while having 3 more needing to be finished within an hour or so before the day ran out. I wanted out, I wanted to just walk away or blow up. But I remembered that no this will not last forever and it will pass, just like the breath it arises, changes and passes, then comes a new one that follows just like a new day.

Choose better. Choose to be better. It is the better choice. Millions of Buddhas recommend it as 'the choice for a new generation' of Buddhas . . .
