Buddhist retreats in Kathmandu?

I am going to be in Nepal in May to do a little climb to Everest Base Camp. After my trek I'd like to attend a buddhist retreat, or a buddhist center which offers dharma talks and meditation instruction. Does anyone have any recommendations in Kathmandu or thereabouts?
(Not sure which category to post this in either)

There will be plenty of foreign visitors to ask when you get there. You could also go to a travel bookstore and look at a book on Nepal. Or try Google.
  • Was hoping to receive a personal recommendation, especially from a fellow buddhist, especially if someone has visited a place or knows the reputation of a certain teacher/place.
Have found a few places on google, but i don't know if they are any good or not. And i need to plan in advance, not once i get there. I will be exhanusted after my trek and will not have time/energy to wander around asking about various places.

I find it funny how you're willing to climb (part) of Everest but not really willing to ask around for a Buddhist centre :p

    But sorry, can't help you.

Kopan has a big course/retreat for westerners in the Autumn, run by the FPMT although I think they also accept casual retreatants and run other courses throughout the year. It is in Bodhnath which is a relatively nice bit of Kathmandu, near the famous stupa. I have only been to Kopan for a few days when I managed to wrangle a stopover from a business trip long enough to fly up to Kathmandu but it seemed nice enough. I was going to go after an EBC trip myself but in the end I took a flight down to Pokhara to wind down sipping butter tea by Phewa lake, a different kind of meditation ;-)
  • Thanks @ZenBadger - I was looking at Kopan as they have a course that coicides with my dates.
@Invincible_summer - i am not sure why it is odd that I'd ask a buddhist forum for a recommendation of a buddhist center, rather than arrive on a street and ask total strangers. I mean, i am not arriving at the bottom of Mt. Everest and then plan to start randomly asking for a trekking company to join a group to climb to EBC. I've planned that in advance with recommendations from my trekking buddies for a good trekking company. Same thing.

Just making light of the idea that you're "climbing Everest" (i.e. doing a very physically demanding task) but averse to something that, to most people, would be much easier. That's all.

I guess because you're "the type of person" to go climb to EBC, I thought you'd also be the type who'd like the adventure (or stress, depending on how you look at it! :p)of asking locals for recommendations of things. I shouldn't have assumed. And you're probably strapped for time anyway.

I didn't mean to cause any offence.
  • No offence taken. I am just strapped for time after my climb and would like to make best use of it by spending the maximum amount of time meditating in a nice environment.

I'll second Kopan, they have fairly regular 7 or 10 day retreats directed toward westerners. I attended one many years ago and enjoyed it. See if you can reserve a spot ahead of time, from my memory they had a few single rooms, some double rooms and then any remaining spots are in a dormitory style accomodation.
