    What do you mean by "cheating?" As in not buying one?

    I would think so long as your intention is right, then it doesn't matter if it's white glue + paper and cost you $0.25 or brass (or whatever it's made of) and cost you $100.

    Function over form. I personally think it's nicer to make things yourself that mean something to you rather than just spending more money on things you don't really need.

    I recently made myself a Buddha shadow box alter for my meditation table because I didn't want to spent the extra money on a statue (I already spent enough on books). My Buddha is actually a print-out that I glued to the inside of a small wooden box. ;)
