Everytime I meditate deeply my vision goes black

Everytime I meditate deeply my vision goes black. (Open eye meditation)

It comes and goes, fades in and out. It scares me sometimes when it goes too dark.

Could I have a medical problem?

No, that's fine. It's just your brain shutting down your vision to focus on whatever you are meditating on.
Ajahn Brahm says the brain is very lazy, and when we are in deep meditation it starts turning off the senses. There's nothing interesting coming through the eyes, so it turns off.
Eventually all the senses disappear and you're left in just some mind-space. Then you can get nimittas and jhanas and the rest.
According to his way of meditating anyway.

But best get checked by a doctor anyway. Some random people on a Buddhist forum on the internet are not a good substitute for a doctor if you think you may be going blind!

Yes had that. Sometimes the opposite and everything turns into light.
Say hello to 'Mr Scared', nothing too unusual with him arising either . . .
  • It happens to me every time I sit. I don't think it is anything to fret over (unless it continues OFF the cushion!).
