Movie Reviews

I thought this area of the site would be a good one to share different movies we have found inspiring, emotional, funny, or just plain cool. I saw the thread about V for Vendetta and decided it would be good if we all shared various movies that have inspired us. So I will start.

I am very much into historical movies. One of my favorites is "Kingdom of Heaven" directed by Ridley Scott. It follows the life of a reluctant crusading knight in the Holy Land who finds to his surprise a great inheritance from his father. The knight wants peace in his new home, but corrupt Templars, and blood-thristy commanders want a Holy War.

I found this movie deeply inspiring and especially relevant to the tension between Christians and Muslims today. The movie ends in a very untypical Hollywood fashion.

So name that movie!

Great movie, YM! I saw it twice already. Maybe not what you'd call inspiring, but a wonderful movie.

As for my list of inspirational movies, I'd have to start it off with Little Buddha. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I absolutely love it. The scene where Lama Norbu prostrates to Jesse and Jesse responds by prostrating back and they touch foreheads always makes my cry (I know, boys don't cry, but there ya go). And I also thought Keanu Reeves did a terrific job. So there!

I wish the movie store in my town had "Kundun" and "Little Buddha" and any other movies of this kind. I'd really like to see them.

I just saw "Akeelah and the Bee" and thought it was great. Keke Palmer, who plays Akeelah really shines.

As for inspirational movies, there must have been many but I can't think of them at the moment. I'll get back to you.

I quite agree, Palzang! It's a really enjoyable film. Of course, having Sogyal Rinpoche bouncing around in it adds a dimension of teaching but doesn't bash you over the head with it. Me, I cry when they are listening to the Heart Sutra. I want that read at my deathbed, if I can arrange it!

Yeah, Sogyal Rinpoche was a hoot. The character he played is so unlike the way he is in real life. I met him briefly in India and had a hard time believing it was the same person. He was so reserved and formal.

Another inspiring movie on my list is The Sixth Sense, which is very Buddhist, though I also very much doubt that that was on the director's mind when he made it, based on his later output which has come nowhere close to his first big hit. The Matrix would also be up there.

I loved Kundun, I've seen it twice.......

I also loved the Last Samurai. I know others didn't care for it . But when he is in the village is the part that I find so inspirational........I could watch that part a million times...
Oh yeah, I probably already have.............

LOL! I just sent you a PM, Deb, and in it I told you that I just saw "Kundun" last night for the first time on my dad's satellite TV and I explained that it was the life if HHDL, if you hadn't already known that. lol! I didn't know you'd already seen it twice. That's funny. I loved it. I thought Scorsese did a great job. I found the music a little overpowering, though. I wish there had been a little more silence.

Sharon Stone was in Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival last week and she was commenting on the Montreal shootings. She said that the shooter didn't get enough love, etc. etc. and went on to say that she followed the teachings of HHDL. I'm happy for her that she found Buddhism. I hope Hollywood doesn't grab hold of it and make it all weird, though.

I liked Last Samurai as well. The battle scenes were cool and all, but I like the scenes in the village as well when Cruise talks about his new found spirituality among the Japanese and doubting his old faith.

Kundun was an amazing movie. I think I will rent Little Buddha.

So we saw Little Miss Sunshine yesterday and absolutely LOVED it. It was the only movie where I was crying and laughing all at the same time. Palzang - my very favorite part was when the little girl was doing her routine at the competition, and then at the beginning of the movie when the mom brought home chicken for dinner, and grandpa shared his thoughts about that - LOL!!!! What a great movie. The grandpa was my favorite character. They were all good.

Yeah, not to give away the plot, but that ending was terrific. The little girl I thought stole the movie. She was amazing. Yeah, I like Alan Arkin too. He's always great in everything he does.

I liked The Last Samurai also except for the stupid Hollywood ending which was obviously tacked on. The scenes in the village, however, were great...even with Herr Cruise.

I agree! That little girl was the cutest thing! What a great little actress. And Toni Collette is always great too.

I just finished watching 'Unbreakable' with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. It is kind of sad but a really great movie anyways.

It's about two men completely opposite of each other. Elijah (Jackson) suffers from a protein deficiency and has extremely fragile bones. He obsesses over finding the person that is the opposite. He does when he meets David (Willis) and finds that his bones can't break and that he has never been sick or injured. Being the sole survivor or a train wreck, David then then realizes what he is capable of doing when he is literally unreakable.
