Flowers (weeds will do) are always good. Buddhas get thirsty and like a bowl of water for when they visit. Also they like incense reminds them of the purelands ...
@Tasey, even if you manage to just put up a little shelf somewhere, and use that, it will be fine. An Altar isn't a prerequisite, and I do know it's nice to have a focal point, but occasionally, even wearing a Mala around your wrist can bring your attention to whatever you're doing, and make you Mindful.
How old are your children?
Are you a single mum, or do you have a partner...?
Some Buddhist Tantrka, wear a Buddha in a little pouch. Which they raise above their heads to remind them of the Altering ... Maybe a Buddhabox?
