"All up in her vibe something coming over me
Summer days more likely that you notice breezes
Winter days more likely that you notice heat
When I'm warm more likely that you notice me
In the dark it's more likely that you notice light
In the light more likely that you notice night
Hungry more appreciation for that meal
Dead broke more appreciation for that grill
A bad day'll make you really notice ones that's good
And that'll make things a little better understood
Times I feel I wanna shout, man it's real that way
When I think of things that make you feel that way"

Not specifically Buddhist, but some lyrics that comment on the mutability and persistence of desire. (That's a fancy way of saying that if you don't want one thing, you want another.)
    Bahia, land of happiness
Mulatta, I'm going crazy missing you
    My Lord of Bonfim
Please get me another mulatta just like that
Na Baixa do Sapateiro, by Ary Barroso

This is from an old Cuban song.
A woman in love (si, sen~or)
    Resembles a hen (vamanos)
Because if the rooster dies (si, sen~or)
    She'll find another (vamamos)

    Jeff Buckley - Satisfied Mind

"How many times have you heard someone say,
"If I had money, I would do things my way."
But little they know, that it's so hard to find
one rich man in ten, with a satisfied mind.

Money can't buy back all your youth when you're old,
a friend when you're lonely, or peace to your soul.
The wealthiest person, is a pauper at times
compared to the man with a satisfied mind.

When my life is over and my time has run out,
my friends and my loved ones, I will leave there's no doubt.
But one thing's for certain, when it comes my time,
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind."

    The Jam - That's Entertainment

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqiXf0WxDPQ

"A police car and a screaming siren -
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete -
A baby wailing and stray dog howling -
The screech of brakes and lamp light blinking -

    That's Entertainment.

A smash of glass and a rumble of boots -
An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth -
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat -
Lights going out and a kick in the balls -

    That's Entertainment.

Days of speed and slow time Mondays -
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday -
Watching the news and not eating your tea -
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls -

    That's Entertainment.

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning -
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol -
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard -
Watching the tele and thinking about your holidays -

    That's Entertainment.

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes -
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume -
A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac -
Fedding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away -

    That's Entertainment.

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight -
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude -
Getting a cab and travelling on buses -
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs -

    That's Entertainment."

    Bob Dylan's Blowin' In The Wind;

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
    Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
    Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

    KT Tunstall, Heal Over

    "Heal Over"

It isn't very difficult to see why
You are the way you are
Doesn't take a genius to realise
    That sometimes life is hard
    It's gonna take time
But you'll just have to wait
    You're gonna be fine
    But in the meantime

    Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
    Come a little nearer baby
    Coz you'll heal over
    Heal over
    Heal over someday

And I don't wanna hear you tell yourself
That these feelings are in the past
You know it doesn't mean they're off the shelf
    Because pain's built to last
    Everybody sails alone
But we can travel side by side
    Even if you fail
You know that no one really minds
    Come over here lady

Don't hold on but don't let go
    I know it's so hard
You've got to try to trust yourself
I know it's so hard, so hard

    Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
    Come a little nearer baby
Coz you'll heal over, heal over, heal over someday

    TOOL!!

    Parabola:
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
    Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

    Lateralus:
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

It occurred to me today that Bo Diddly wrote a song about a heruka. :-)

    Who Do You Love

    By Bo Diddley (Ellas McDaniel)

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
    I use a cobra-snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house on the roadside,
    Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, arlene,
And tell me, who do you love?

    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mine,
    Just 22 and I don't mind dying.

    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?

I rode a lion to town, use a rattlesnake whip,
Take it easy arlene, don't give me no lip,

    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?

Arlene took me by my hand,
And she said ooowee bo, you know I understand.

    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?
    Who do you love?

Here's a lovely poem that has been set to music by several artists, including my current faves, Libera, a boys choir from London that has a genius director who writes all their arrangements Check them out here. The poem, interestingly, was written by a Baltimore housewife. Libera's version is slightly different than the original. It's not particularly "Buddhist", I suppose, but I really like it. And yes, I have eccentric tastes!

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints in snow,
I am the sunlight and ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

Libera also does a smashing interpretation of the Beach Boys classic "Love and Mercy", which they performed at the Kennedy Centers Honors a couple of years ago.

I think this song relates to the longing for relief that is a motivation.. Kind of a stretch but I really like this song lyrics.. Analysing it however it is very unbuddhist because the person is disempowering themselves as helpless. And appealing to a goddess. Which is actually quite human, but is probably wrong thinking.

    "Aurora"

    Threading
    The glacier head
    Looking hard for
    Moments of shine
    From twilight
    To twilight
    Utter mundane

    Aurora
    Goddess sparkle
    Shoot me
    Beyond this suffer
    The need
    Is great
    Aurora
    Utter mundane

    Aurora
    Goddess sparkle
    A mountain shade
    Suggests your shape
    I tumbled down
    On my knees
    Fill the mouth
    With snow
    The way it melts
    I wish
    To melt
    Into you
    Aurora
    Utter mundane

    Spark the sun off
    Spark the sun off
    Spark the sun off
    Spark the sun off me

I can't believe no one's posted this yet..

Within You Without You - Beatles

We were talking - about the space between us all
And the people - who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth - then it's far too late - when they pass away.

We were talking - about the love we all could share - when we find it
To try our best to hold it there - with our love
With our love - we could save the world - if they only knew.

Try to realize it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life flows on within you and without you.

We were talking - about the love that's gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul -
They don't know - they can't see - are you one of them?

When you've seen beyond yourself -
Then you may find peace of mind, is waiting there -
And the time will come when you see we're all one,
And life flows on within you and without you.

And heck, one more for good measure...

All You Need Is Love - Beatles

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
    It's easy.

There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time
    It's easy.

    All you need is love
    All you need is love,
    All you need is love.
    Love is all you need.

There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
    It's easy.

    All you need is love
    All you need is love,
All you need is love, love
    Love is all you need.

    All you need is love
    All together now!
    All you need is love
    Everybody!
All you need is love, love
    Love is all you need.

Actually the version that Libera does is slightly different than the original, although no one knows for absolute certain who wrote it first. The lady in Baltimore usually gets credit, but there are other contenders. Doesn't matter, it's beautiful no matter who wrote it! Did you listen to Libera singing it?

This is a translation of Concao ao Lado, from the Concao ao Lado CD by the Portuguese group Deolinda.

I apologise to all the wise men, aesthetes,
    Poet driven spirits, delicate souls,
For the falseness of my genius and my words.

    I sing Erudition,
The awe of Life, the grace of Beauty
But I only aspire to mastering the art of planting potatoes.

    Sorry for the inconvenience
But fado isn't going to be played here
If you expected to hear Deolinda you entered the wrong place.
We are playing in the house next door.
We're all in the wrong places.

I know there are masons who are writers,
    Well-read handymen and poet-servants
And poets who are truly masons around words.
Sing in your genuine art, humble fisherman,
Modest fish seller...and so many celebrities should
perhaps try and practice some fishing.

    Sorry for the inconvenience
Because somehow I'm not allowed to do what I love the most.
I sing out of pain for being where I am.
And somewhere I know someone as stuck in the wrong
place as I am is right where I was supposed to be.

Nobody is happy with what they have and there's always Mr. So and So
Who's going to come and help us.
However Mr. So and So seldom is who he's supposed to be.

    Sorry for the inconvenience
I propose this to you: change.
It's not a dreadful step into dark utopias.
It's as simple as changing stations on the radio.
I propose this: switch places with yourselves and make your life right!

    Pick somebody up
    I don't wanna be nobody's fool
And I don't wanna take no one to school
I just wanna pick somebody up
I don't wanna tell you how to live
I just wanna give what I have to give
    Maybe it'll pick somebody up

    Smiling faces, warm embraces
Love is walking hand in hand
    Revolution is no solution
    To the tragedy of man,
    here's my plan
    Hope I can:
    Pick somebody up

Take a stranger, out of danger
    Help someone to understand
    That revolution is no solution
    To the tragedy of man,
    here's my plan
    Hope I can
    Pick somebody up

When I'm happy, when I'm sad
When I'm surly, and when I'm glad
When that sunshine turns to rain
And I just can't stand the pain
And I feel I'm going insane
Till I get back home again

    When I think I can't compete
And I just can't find the beat
When I'm old, when I'm young
When my final saw this song
I shall hope we have some fun
    Spreading love to everyone
So before I tip my cup
I just wanna pick somebody up

As I sit here and slowly close my eyes
I take another deep breath and feel the wind pass through my body
I'm the one in your soul, reflecting inner light
Protect the ones who hold you, cradeling your inner child

I need serenity in a place where I can hide
I need serenity, nothing changes days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we re-light the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Tragic visions slowly stole my life
Tore away everything, cheating me out of my time
I'm the one who loves you no matter wrong or right
    And everyday I hold you
I hold you with my inner child

I need serenity in a place where I can hide
I need serenity, nothing changes days go by
Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we re-light the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we re-light the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

I need serenity (Where do we go when we just don't know)
I need serenity (And how do we re-light the flame when it's cold)
I need serenity (Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing)
I need serenity (And when will we learn to control)

Much like our life, flux is defined as an elemental state in constant change or motion. Anyone who has meditated near flowing water might have contemplated this.

The lyrics are to be interpreted sarcastically until the main verse.

    Youtube video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttcboE1GrNg

"If your right hand is causing you pain
Cut it off cut it off
If your colours have started to run
Let them all run, run away from you
There is lightning in this room
Above our heads waiting to strike
Im a thinker not a talker
Put your faith, your faith in God

We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a state of Flux

    I'd kill for an adventure
Just you and I in the Curzon Bar
    Dancing till we knew
So all that we've learnt disappeared
    When you shouted at me
I saw my father in the second grade
    Concerned and kind
But yet unable to reach me

We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a State of Flux

    State of Flux [x9]

    We need to talk [x5]

We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a state of Flux"

Funkadelic - Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts

    Travel like a king
    Listen to the inner voice
A higher wisdom is at work for you
Conqering the stumbling blocks come easier
When the conqueror is in tune with the infinite
Every ending is a new beginning
    Life is an endless unfoldment
Change your mind, and you change your relation to time

    You can find the answer
The solution lies within the problem
The answer is in every question
    Dig it?
An attitude is all you need to rise and walk away
    Inspire yourself
    Your life is yours
It fits you like your skin

The oak sleeps in the acorn
The giant sequoia tree sleeps in its tiny seed
The bird waits in the egg
God waits for his unfoldment in man
    Fly on, children
    Play on

You gravitate to that which you secretly love most
You meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts
There is no chance, coincidence or accident
In a world ruled by law and divine order
You rise as high as your dominant aspiration
You descend to the level of your lowest concept of your self
Free your mind and your ass will follow

The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers
Its nature is to respond to your thoughts
Be careful of the thought-seeds you plant in the garden of your mind
For seeds grow after their kind

    Play on, children

    Every thought felt as true
Or allowed to be accepted as true by your conscious mind
    Take roots in your subconscious
Blossoms sooner or later into an act
    And bears its own fruit
Good thoughts bring forth good fruit
    Bullshit thoughts rot your meat
Think right, and you can fly
The kingdom of heaven is within
Free your mind, and your ass will follow

    Play on, children
    Sing on, lady

    Stuck In A Moment

    U2

    I'm not afraid
    Of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me
    That I haven't already heard
    I'm just trying to find
    A decent melody
A song that I can sing
    In my own company

I never thought you were a fool
But darling, look at you. Ooh.
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
'Cause tears are going nowhere baby

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And now you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

    I will not forsake
    The colors that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks
    They left you with nothing
    I am still enchanted
By the light you brought to me
    I listen through your ears
Through your eyes I can see

    You are such a fool
To worry like you do.. Oh
    I know it's tough
And you can never get enough
Of what you don't really need now
    My, oh my

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Oh lord look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment
And you cant gt out of it

    I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm 'til you discover how deep
I wasn't jumping, for me it was a fall
It's a long way down to nothing at all

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if your way should falter
    Along this stony pass

    It's just a moment
    This time will pass

By the way, the song Stuck In A Moment was written by Bono for Michael Hutchence (lead singer of INXS) after he committed suicide. The music's lyrics were the words he wished he'd said to Michael, the fight he wished he'd had with him, before he died.
As Bono said in 2005, "It's a row between mates. You're kinda trying to wake them up out of an idea. In my case it's a row I didn't have while he was alive. I feel the biggest respect I could pay to him was not to write some stupid soppy fucking song, so I wrote a really tough, nasty little number, slapping him around the head. And I'm sorry, but that's how it came out of me."

Perhaps it's because of my grim choice in music, but I always thought "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas was Buddha-like.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hzv0TSSDgU

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

I have climbed the highest mountains
I have run through the fields
    Only to be with you

I have run, I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
    Only to be with you

But I still haven't found, What I'm looking for

    I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
    It burned like fire
    This burning desire

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

    But I still haven't found,What I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
    Bleed into one
    But yes, I'm still running

    You broke the bonds
    And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross of my shame
Of my shame, you know I believe it

But I still haven't found, What I'm looking for

    in every life

when you worry you make it double
    don't worry, be happy

    dont worry be happy now
    dont worry be happy
    dont worry be happy
    dont worry be happy
    dont worry be happy
aint got no place to lay your head,
somebody came and took your bed,
    don't worry, be happy

the landlord say your rent is late,
    he may have to litagate,
dont worry (small laugh) be happy,

    look at me im happy,
    don't worry, be happy

    ...

Alejandro Escovedo almost died onstage while performing in Arizona. The medicine he took for hepatitis almost killed him a second time. His hospital bills were so large that a number of well known musicians recorded the CD "Por Vida" to raise money to help him out.

This is the first track off the first CD he made after recovering. In an interview I heard, he said that the lyrics refer to the changes he had to make in his life (no more booze, etc), but also to his new Buddhist practice.

    Arizona

    Have another drink on me
    I've been empty since Arizona
I turned my back on me
And I faced the face of who I thought I was.

On kiss just led to another
One kiss just fades into lover

Blow another smoke ring for me
I've been straight so straight since Arizona
You say I've lost my way
    But it's all a dream
    Since Arizona

On kiss just led to another
One kiss just fades into lover

    We must overcome exploitative greed,
with global generocity, helpfulness and cooperation indeed,
For our hearts to be freed.

Our hate and revenge must be replaced with,
kindness, tolerence and the ability to forgive,
So our kindness will always live.

Recognise that our world is an independent, interwoven whole,
such that irresponsible behaviour is a nasty hole,
that can potentially harm life's balanced pole.

I made that up just know :)
