How do they build it without nails? Are they just wedged together so tightly that it can't shift or move?

That first picture especially is very framable. I wouldn't mind a print of that on the wall :)

It's amazing when you see it up close - how alien the architecture is to the western eye.

If you look at the salmon colored temple very closely you will see that alot of the pieces are held together with a combination of a saddle joint. and gravity. Also many Japanese old buildings are held together with a "mortise and tenon". look the term up on google much easer than me trying to explain it. I also call it a sex joint. Very common in Japan and many temples use it alot.
    Glad you like the photos

That is some truly amazing architecture.

Same thing with the egyptians. It falls under the "HOW THE F* DID THEY DO THAT?" category.....

There is a huge Oriental Shopping Mall in the UK. British builders wasted an awful lot of time & money trying to build a traditional roof on the place. in the end, they had to import specialist Japanese builders - who finished the roof in less time it took the Brits to build the whole fooing mall-!! However, it did end up costing them 7 times the original budget for the roof alone, but you know what they say; 'If you're going to pay peanuts you'll only get monkeys!'

I don't know if it's a problem outside of my state (Michigan), but here the way it goes is: The lowest bidder gets the job. That generally means the worst quality. That's why our roads are rated some of the worst in the country :(
