To this Buddhist community

edited May 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Since Friday, I have somewhat attacked this forum with question, after question, and have even found myself opening an article of really personal matters, in which I have not spoke to anyone about.

I simply have made this post, not for comments, but for those who have spoke to me to read.

I really am thankful for the time you have taken to help me and make my understanding greater.

The decision I have made for those who read and followed my thread "My biggest problem" is this:

I will and have made plans to go and visit a shrink; I am aware that this may help, although I have often felt they are liars...As they pretend to know the mind of others, when in fact only I do. But I will give it a try.

And I have spoken to my local temple in my nearest city, and someone there is going to come out to my house and visit with me and talk to me about the path of Buddhism, especially Theravada. I am a very traditional person, and feel, although I may be wrong this would be a good school/teachings which would suit me.

I thank you all, I will not pretend to be anything I am not, especially Buddhist, as my journey has just started. So please do not think i am putting myself on your levels by ending this with a quote from Buddha, which I found....And really really like.

Thank you...As odd as it seems, you all truly mean something to me, and know I am better for coming here.

Thank you for having the confidence and trust in us to have opened yourself up in such a way.
I really am thankful for the time you have taken to help me and make my understanding greater.
look, we may bicker, banter, debate and discuss, chitter and chat, but in the end, frankly, we're all tied to the same rope, and making our way up the hill together.
A helping hand is always welcome, and always offered. :)

If I may just add at this point.... there's more than one shrink, and more than one type of shrink.
You are not obliged to stick with the first one you find.
Secondly, some of us here have had experience of either being counsellors, or seeing them (both, in fact, I'm sure!) so we do know where you're coming from.
    thirdly, remember this:
Insofar as marriage counsellors are concerned, specifically, it has been shown that the rate of divorce among such counsellors, is not, pro-rata, any worse or better than that of the general population - who may, or may not avail themselves of Marriage counselling!
What I mean to say is - remember counsellors, therapists and shrinks are all, after all, just people like you and me.
Understanding the workings of the mind (as opposed to the brain) is an inexact science. In fact, much of what is known about the workings of the mind, is probably an unknown, really,..... every single person is different.....
    so be gentle with them.
At the end of the day, all they want to do is to help you, help yourself.

And I have spoken to my local temple in my nearest city, and someone there is going to come out to my house and visit with me and talk to me about the path of Buddhism, especially Theravada. I wish you well and hope the meeting will be fruitful and beneficial for you.

well, a decent "shrink" should know the mechanic of the brain and mind.
In the end, the way the mind function is very predictable.
The mind isn't you, it is more like an operating system, filled with computer programs, the brain itself being the hardware...
    We are all the same.

Did you know that many "shrinks" are getting very familiar with Buddhist practices and meditation? understanding how and why meditation works... Some of them are Buddhists as well.
