Stance on Piercings?

edited June 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this and if it's I'm sorry!

Anyways I haven't found a concrete answer to this question and I'm not sure if there even is one. How does Buddhism view piercings? I realize that because it is technically art that it may be viewed positively but then I also thought that attaching metal to your body may also be seen as putting an impurity into your body? I'm not really sure? I have my ears pierced but I don't wear earrings but the reason I ask is because I plan on getting my hips pierced with dermal anchors next spring. It is a piercing that involves a metal hook being placed under the skin as an anchor and attaching a jewel or stud. It sounds gruesome but I can include some pictures just to give a better idea. Now this kind of piercing is small and not deep at all but again metal is an impurity and I would be attaching it to my body. Is that bad?

The Vajrayana Kalachackra initiation mentions a child having his/her ears pierced as a usual stage of life/growing up.

Piercings are typically regarded as piercings... that's about it. :) However, there are some who consider personal adornment in that regard to be the attachment of vanity. Not that its a big deal, really, but you might want to consider what is driving you to put jewels on your hips.

    With warmth,

Do his ears answer your question?

The Buddha is generally depicted with stretched ears to signify renunciation of worldyl pleasures. That mental renunciation is what Buddhism is concerned with. They aren't inherently "bad" but as all things are objects which we can become attached to and from a Buddhist perspective that's the potential issue. I would know; I'm very attached to mine. :buck:

    I love his ears (:
Ok well I like you Valtiel. Thanks for not pretending to be flawless. I was forced to assess the reason I wanted them in psychology and I know it's strictly to please myself but I'm glad it's not considered impure.

Wow... so there are women out there who like big ears that seem to drip off a man's head? Maybe there's hope for me yet! :)

Buddhism teaches to get rid of all attachments, so I vote no on the piercings :P
