New To The Forum A Bit of Guidance Please

edited June 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I am interested in the teachings of buddhism and would like as much help as possible with my learning and beginning meditation. I want to know the whole thing behind prayer beads and statues etc. I don't have much money so a place where I can read books online for free would be greatly appreciated.

Mindfulness in Plain English is one of the best things you can read on this topic, free or otherwise.

Ken Mcleod's (my teacher) podcasts are also an excellent free resource. For a beginner, I highly recommend Ideology and Wisdom.

They are not mutually exclusive in fact I have two Jewish brothers in law who are also practicing Buddhists.

Thich Nhat Hanh embraces all religions and in fact encourages everyone to go back to their roots while at the same time practicing Mindfulness and core teachings of Buddhism. ;)

Can you give a little more information on that and some place to read about it? Also the different forms of buddhism.

Thanks for the video I will watch it soon. I'm interested in Zen Buddhism to more specific so can anyone shoot me in that direction?

For Zen Buddhism, I would recommend Thich Nhat Hanh. Just Google his name. I myself have difficulty listening to his accent, but that's just me. Very good reading though.
