Attaching to music?

edited August 2010 in Buddhism Basics
A lot of songs I listen to bring up memories or make me think of certain things. Is it unskillful to listen to music if it makes you not mindful of the present moment?

One is always mindful of the present moment, you're aware whether you like it or not lol..
Memories of the past will come up regardless, you'll always have people that you come across, music that you hear and things that you see that will pop up past or future thoughts. I mean, that's all thoughts are past and future. Really listen to the thoughts that come and go .. they can never touch what happens now because every moment is born and dies at the same time. All thoughts can do is think about what just happened or surmise about the future. The mind can't touch reality; it's definitely a useful tool though.

    Hope this helps my friend.

I just thought about that when I bought some records today, so your question stuck out to me.

Many things can trigger memories, like sights, smells and sounds. This is all part of living with senses. Perhaps the real practice comes from not avoiding what our senses trigger (in this case, music), but learning to let the feelings manifest and pass on. We can look deeply into how we feel and practice understanding of why we feel that way. Music and all art can give us many perspectives on things.

Of course, we can use many things to escape, music included. Perhaps it is important to look deeply and understand the nature of our escapes, and the intentions behind them.

If a song triggers a certain memory then experiencing that memory is part of the present moment. Let it happen, experience it and let it pass on it's own time. now if this is causing you to be distracted from what's going on around you then that is something that you need to work on rather than trying to avoid certain music or certain memories.
