    concentration meditation.

often the object of the concentration is the breath.

Concentration meditation consist of basically just focus and re-refocus your attention on the object of meditation after it wandered away, until you attain certain states called jhana.

Ajahn Brahm wrote a good book about it, and many links on this websites will direct you to whatever more information you want to know about it.

I personally like the clear thought technique where when thinking occurs you simply say 'thinking, thinking, thinking'.. and any other phenomena you do the same. In this one creates clear thoughts and eventually sees that the phenomena that are occurring are empty of self. Improved concentration and creative thinking and merely a byproduct of seeing reality clearly.

  • not sure what you mean by free thought.

Standard Vipassana meditation will improve your concentration.
