  • Yes of course. And calling Col. Dyer anything but a "nazi" doesn't make sense. But Gandhi's methods eventually prevailed against. I am not sure they would have done so with the Germans.
  • There is little you can do to open a closed mind.

We can give you all sorts of good arguments. we can show you that the 'inerrant' Scriptures were subject to amendment, editing and change right up to the present day. None of this will convince anyone who needs to believe that they are right by their certainty of others' wrongness.

This is a sad truth to accept, particularly when we are young and full of the zeal of youth.

You are in a truly hard place, @Meg, and my heart goes out to you. To swim against the undertow of prevailing bigotry is desperate. The only thing to do, if you don't want to have a really hard time - and there's nothing wrong with that, except it's painful - is to keep your head down and hope to survive.

The current fanaticism of the religious bigot is deeply worrying to many of us who believe that the true role of spirituality is the path to peace, justice and happiness. The spirit of Salem seems to have infected parts of the USA and to produce a pathological mindset.

I recall reading, somewhere, that Gandhi, when asked about this, maintained that ahimsa would have worked but that many thousands would have suffered. It is not an easy path.

  • I think it's fine to keep quiet about your spiritual practice and beliefs.
Yes, right. how would anyone at your school know you're not on their "team"? If there are prayers, or something, you can just make a pretence of going along.

  • I like another of his quotations:
Journalist/Interviewer: "Mr Gandhi, what do you think of Western civilisation?"
Gandhi: "I think it would be a very good idea."
Ha, haven't heard that one. Thanks.
