Do you still play video games?

  • If you play sacred 2 check out the wiki for information. Theres a nice community linked to the wiki, Dark Matters.
  • Oh I play PC or I could recommend some games.. Dragon Age Origins is on ps3 I think if you have tried a Bioware game. Its not ARPG though.
I bought Dragon Age coz a friend of mine recommended it. It's an amazing game but it is too linear for me to really enjoy - I prefer completely open world rpgs. But thanks for the recommendation - it's certainly a high quality game. The dialog and response selections are the best and most natural I have seen on any game.
  • sacred 2 is a huge world. you might enjoy that more. i think it is the largest world in a video game ever but i could be wrong.

  • The only Japanese RPGs I actually finish are Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon. If you haven't played Kingdom Hearts you definitely should. It's one of the best games I've played period. All of them are good and not just good in a story way, I mean they're actually fun. They're more combat and action orientated compared to other RPGs. So to me all that hacking and slashing with the elemental attacks added in is fun and therapeutic.

Personally I've never played an RPG that felt like it had a better combat system than Kingdom Hearts. I feel Kingdom Hearts has the best combat system of any RPG I've played. And all the good ones are probably learning from that.

God of War has a great combat system too, but of course that is more action/adventure game than RPG.

Right Mr Serenity, Kingdom Hearts is now on my list of games to play. I'll give it a go based on your glowing recommendation.

GoW is a game that I've played and enjoyed greatly on the PSP and the PS3. Darksiders is also great in a similar vein to GoW but bigger scope.

Another game I've enjoyed on the PS3 is Prototype. Not quite fully open world but still many interesting elements in the game. I like picking up cars and throwing them at helicopters.
  • @Ficus_religiosa, Sacred 2 is a more simple RPG and I usually pick hack and slash characters. Not much in the way of storyline but very bug open world which progresses as you do your main quests. I loved it, hope you do too. You should be able to find it in the bargain bin. I bought mine for $20.

Thanks for those two suggestions. They both look like my type of games. I'll have to try them maybe through gamefly soon.

  • @Vangelis
I can allow myself to spend $20 :)

Just out of curiosity: How often do you guys play a character in a Buddhist way? (you have to kill attackers, though).
I usually do it (with a new character) after having tried out the more pragmatic way of doing things :)
  • If there's a choice between a "light" path and a "dark" path, I always choose the "light". I just can't bring myself to kill "innocents" even though they're just electrons!
  • I'm looking forward to getting my computer back from the pawn shop to play Dead Space 2!!
  • Is it just me, or is this almost like a dharma talk?

  • I have no console here in Thailand, but when I was back in England I went through 2 ps3's. I sold them both in the end. But if I could play some games right now, I would play worms, GTA4, time splitters 2, golden eye, pokemon on the game boy, any of the gran turismo games, mario 64 and zelda. Ahhh, nostalgia ^.^

Oblivion you can play in a buddhist way. You can choose illusion and cast: calm, chameleon, and invisibility, and turn undead, maybe another. You gain levels by using your skills rather than killing monsters. You might have to kill occasionally to advance the main quest, but oblivion is a sandbox (roaming world) and so you don't have to play the main quest.

You take 7 skills. I would take: sneak (to be stealthy), Illusion, Alteration magic (shield spell, open locks in ruins not residents, water breath, fits 2 needed things armor and locks), block, athletics (to run away), restoration (to heal and it can possibly kill if necessary with absorb health or absorb skill: blade then fight with blade), alchemy (more healing, invisibility, shields, etc) Other options - speach, mercantile, acrobatics, light armor. Another option is destruction and cast damage fatigue, though with restoration you may be able to absorb fatigue.... (they pass out when fatigued).. Hand to hand drains damage and fatigue so its possible to knock unconscious but sometimes kill..

I think I'll try it just for fun :)

It is designed as a world to kill monsters but there is a beatiful country and quests some of which to complete without fighting.
  • Don't seem to be able to edit....

Don't buy oblivion unless you want to hack n slash dungeon crawl WITH an option of a pacifist play through. Its not worth it just as a pacifist as its mostly set up to kill things, but you CAN be a pacifist possibly. Just cast calm and run away from things mostly. You can gather alchemical ingredients, make and sell potions. And kill totally evil things like skeletons/monsters etc, just not humans/animals and intelligent neutral or benign races. Or however you want really.
  • I mostly play Call of Duty Black Ops, but my all tine favorite games are Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.
  • If it's on the computer its Starcraft all the way!!! Best PC game ever!
  • Cool. A thread about videogames.

Videogames are like comfort food for me.

I'm currently playing Minecraft. A huge time sink. Who knew that a videogame without any real goals could be so much fun. I just built my first mini mansion and a few mob traps.

Also, I'm actually replaying Final Fantasy 7 on pc. Never finished it. I was stuck cuz of some glitch. I really like the materia magic system.

I love videogames, but I recently find myself going days or even weeks not playing at all. Maybe just cuz I'm getting old.

I'm a lot more picky about what I play now. I really enjoy discovering semi-artsy indie games. I love the creativity and originality.

But I still enjoy games like Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops (zombie mode). I wish I had more xbox live friends to play with. Socializing while gaming makes it a lot better.

Ok, I should stop. I go on forever talking about videogames.

  • I'm a huge FInal Fantasy fan and my all-time favourite was FF8 (Squall vs Seifer!), perhaps simply because it was the first one I played. I worked my way through the rest though, all the way up to FF12 until I became more interested in Buddhism, met my teacher Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, and had less time for games.

Get Kingdom Hearts, you can't really go wrong with the series - probably one of the better action RPG's even though its a little kiddish.

I recently got myself an iPhone and am once again contemplating mobile gaming - can someone tell me if its worth getting Chaos Rings? Its pricey...
  • I play if one of my brothers is playing, like Call of Duty Black Ops we played the other night. Otherwise, more useful stuff to be doing. :)

I play video games but I'm so bad at them I rarely get to finish the whole thing and just trade them in for new ones. stupid huh? An interesting thing about video games is to compare our emotional response to unreal simulated worlds with our emotional response to what we imagine about the "real" world. I'd say it's VERY similar. In fact, I'd say the difference between "real" and "unreal" thoughts is our mere belief in some not others -- but our beliefs change all the time. <-- this could be a slippery slope! :screwy:

    Any suggestions?

What do you consider a semi-artsy indie game lol? I can't say I remember a Buddhist themed or Indie theme game.

  • For semi-artsy and/or indie games I liked Shadow of the Colossus (really good, I hope they do an hd remake). There's also ICO, Minecraft, Revenge of the Titans, Machinarium, Samorost, American McGee's Alice, Cave Story, Knytt Story, and some other small flash games in web browser, can't remember the names.

Nowadays it seems like pc gaming is at the forefront of creativity. It's easier for indie devs to create a small unique game for the pc and just post it out there for people to try, and if they get a good response the developer may expand the demo into a full game that they can sell.

I'm really a fan of videogames as an art form. Some people say video games can't be art, but to me they are. A game can have a certain art style or dialog style that's unique or interesting (Fallout series). A game can have very creative level designs that make it very fun (Alice). A game can have very solid controls and/or play mechanics that make it a joy to play even if the content is just so so (Super Mario Bros.).

Now I'm playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Very deep game, and immersive. I really feel like I'm on a grand adventure.
  • Been playing video games for pretty much all my life. Got an Atari 2600 when I was 4 or 5 (can't recall exactly, memory's hazy) and have been playing ever since. Currently I almost exclusively play on the PS3. My most recent conquest was 'Red Dead Redemption' and I'm playing though 'Uncharted 2' again at the moment. I don't find that I really have any problems with negative emotions while playing. Nor attachment. It's just a passtime to me. Some people watch TV, or play cards or chess or board games with friends to pass time. I play video games.

Thanks for the link. Now I have a good enough reason to buy a PS3.

People keep on mentioning good games on ps3 like Uncharted series, Demons Souls, Little Big Planet, but it just wasn't enough to push me to buy a ps3. Mostly because I already have an xbox360 and there's already a lot good games on there. Shadow of the Colossus HD is a ps3 exclusive that I really really want to play (again).

'Little Big Planet' is honestly one of the best games this generations. Certainly the most creative, in more ways than one.

Has anybody played Amalur? It's really cool kinda like skyrim but more cartoony fantasy than the realistic village conversations of skyrim.

Anyways gamers should play it. It is designed by gamer guys at least a lot of input as all the features work really well and it is made to enjoy.

So get out there gamers! Anyone play this?

I made a three aspect: might, finesse, sorcery character who wielded chakrams sort of light discs and a lightning bolt and toughness and adrenaline of a warrior. Too cool. Poison aura, battle rage aura, and force shield aura.

If you play describe your character...
  • This might date me, but the last video game I played was Qbert (probably around 1981).

This is exactly how I felt about Dragon Age. Fun plot, great handling, love the skill mods... but why oh why can't it just take you off that darn leash? I also hate when I can't actively work on leveling my characters...

I still play a lot of video games, although lately, I've mostly been sticking with Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox. I've always loved the katamari games. For some reason, destroying everything as you get bigger and bigger is really relaxing and makes me feel so accomplished, lol.

Just finished a game called The journey on ps3.

I usually just play a game called katamarI damacy or we love katamari.

Highly reccomend all of those games.

I'll give a plug for good old games. GoG. They allow old games to be played on newer computers. Some of these games have awesome design in the era when graphics weren't so much of a resource hog on games. I am playing a tactical role playing game called icewind dale. I am in a temple of ice priestesses with my team of 6 characters all going by some dungeons and dragons rules. Very nice.

Not much, due to my wife stealing the PS3 to play Mass Effect series.
