    hi

if one is following the standard five precepts, yes

if one is following the special eight or ten precepts, no

    kind regards

    :)

    see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Precepts#Eight_Precepts

  • enough said lol. A lay person can follow the 5 precepts and have jewelery, but not be attached to. But you can also be attached to it, that is up to you. Monks and nuns for the majority stay away from such things are meant to own their robes and their consciousness. However, have seen monks here in Thailand with ATM cards, smoking cigarettes and having sun glasses.. The sun glasses make sense but the ATM card... lol

It's not what you own or what you wear that's important. It's your frame of mind that counts.

HHDL collects watches. Monks sort of compete to have the fanciest watch. So much for precepts. ;) Humans will be human.

Although is that attachment or simply hobby?
  • DakiniDakini Veteran
Great question! With the young monks, I have the impression it's a bit of attachment. With HHDL? One he knows for sure, and he's not saying! ;) Hobby, I suspect.
  • I could be off-base, but I get the impression that HHDL's watch collecting stems from his long standing hobby of "tinkering" with mechanical things.

yeah, that's what i was thinking. But also, it's true that watches are the only type of personal adornment allowed monks. Unless you count HHDL's spiffy prescription glasses.

HHDL does is not a follower the Dhamma-Vinaya of the Buddha.

The schism between Theravada & Mahayana has more to do with personal freedoms of "monks" than varying doctrines.

Mahayana monks can be engaged in politics, use money, charge money for teachings, eat food after 12:00pm, collect things, touch women, more sexual freedoms, etc

For a Buddhist layperson, not using jewellery & personal adnorments are precepts taken when one visits the monastery to stay or in meditation retreat.

    :)

  • Geez, Go to Thailand and see gold and jeweled embellishments everywhere in B. temples! If you are a lay person? If you can afford nice jewelry you must have some darn good karma so go for it! If imitation costume jewelry makes you happy? Makes you feel good! Then go for it!

IM_H_O of course but..., sadly..., I am usually wrong. image

This is interesting about the motive for the schism. Can you give us a reference to more info on that?

As we've seen in umpteen discussions on this site, the rules about sex are more restrictive for some Mahayana than for Theravada. The problem is the rules don't seem to be enforced. If lamas and abbots are breaking the rules, who's going to enforce them for younger monks? Nobody. Why, for example, does no one stop, or sanction, the zen monks who openly admit to leaving the monastery at night to visit prostitutes? Why have rules if no one cares? This mystifies me.

Oh, CLOUD! You party-pooper! Where are we to find out about this stuff, then? I have no investment in any particular school (neither do you), so why can't we discuss this and learn? We're capable of discussing these things with equanimity.

Just 'cause it's off-topic. This thread's about accessories, not the schism between the schools. :)

laurajean, please start a thread asking about the schism between the schools. Cloud says it's ok (sort of...).

  • there's even a buddhist practice for a husband to give jewelry to his wife when going to a long travel... to remember her that he is being loyal while not at home.

there's some pure-gold statues... but that practice may be questioned.

and finally, "there is no adornments in nirvana".
  • I Googled "Buddhist Jewelry" and got 744,000 hits in less than a half second.

    What da heck!? image

  • I see no problem with "Buddhist" jewelry if it aids a person in staying mindful. But I suspect that, more often than not, it's merely worn out of fashion.

I used to wear a tungsten carbide ring with a Greek symbol on it that stood for Wisdom, Love and Power. I figured this would remind me. :) Eventually I noticed it was nothing more than an attachment (and something I was proud of because it was "cool"), and I don't need an attachment as a reminder! I don't need to arouse feelings of pride for no good reason!
  • the only "jewelry' I use is a japa mala, and sometimes a titanium ring (that has what may be a silly meaning).
  • As we've seen in umpteen discussions on this site, the rules about sex are more restrictive for some Mahayana than for Theravada.
I was referring to monks. Not laypeople. Any sex for a Terrorvadin monk means disrobing.

    :)

See my comment above on disciplining monks. Any sex for Mahayana monks also, theoretically, means being defrocked.

From what I have read, President Franklin Roosevelt gave the Rolex watch to the then, very young Dalai Lama. Not sure if he's maintained it all these years on his own.

There is nothing wrong with jewelry or even makeup, sometimes I wear both, but I seldom do either at my age since I don't care that much anymore. I do wear my wedding ring.

  • Hey Doug, I found this on the internet:

    ==============

Yes, it is true. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, wears a Rolex watch, and he has worn a Rolex ever since he was a boy. The challenging question to answer is what kind of Rolex watch the Dalai Lama has worn and maintained for so many years. In the pictures of the Dalai Lama wearing the Rolex watch, only the back of the bracelet is evident.

According to the accepted tale, the American President Franklin Roosevelt gave the Rolex watch to the Dalai Lama. It is a known fact that Franklin Roosevelt wore a Rolex Day-Date. At the time, the Rolex Day-Date was not known as the Rolex Day-Date Presidential. The latter designation was assumed only after Rolex gave a Day-Date to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Before the Day-Date officially became presidential, Franklin Roosevelt wore the Rolex watch in the White House. Putting two and two together, it makes sense that the President would give the young Dalai Lama a Rolex Day-Date. Since Roosevelt died in 1945 and the Dalai Lama was born in 1935, the Rolex watch was given to a mere boy. The Dalai Lama has maintained the Rolex watch in excellent condition for over half a century. How has he been able to perform such a remarkable feat?

As historian Ron Gluckman writes: “Since childhood, the Dalai Lama has been an incorrigible tinkerer. He still has a Rolex watch given to him by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt — a credit to his do-it-yourself skills.” Being a lover of fine machinery, the Dalai Lama naturally fell in love with his Rolex watch. Since the beginning, Rolex has been at the forefront of watchmaking in terms of artistry and precision. Rolex founder, Hans Wilsdorf recognized two major requirements for watches: 1) To keep accurate time, and 2) To be reliable for which Rolex has been recognized for almost as long as watches have been worn. Such quality clearly was recognized by the Dalai Lama at a young age when he already showed signs of the spiritual leader he would become.

In 1990, Teresa Watanabe observed in the Los Angeles Times, “The Dalai Lama is motivated by kindness and love, and his broad appeal hardly seems more complex than that. He seems caring, people say. He seems genuine. He lives simply, wearing a maroon and saffron robe every day. His one apparent luxury, a Rolex watch, was a gift from Franklin Roosevelt. He actually seems to practice what he preaches, the rare leader who has managed to stay untarnished by any hint of personal scandal.” Like how the Rolex watches, which he loves, have come to represent the very best in luxury watches, the Dalai Lama has come to represent the very best in humanity. In a strange way, it makes perfect sense that such a man would choose to wear a Rolex watch. Still, we wish to know without any question or doubt, what model of Rolex is on the wrist of the Dalai Lama? Is his watch a Rolex Day-Date, or is it another one of the stunning Rolex watch models?

The essay is from a jeweler. I just cut and pasted it. Maybe we shouldn't advertise here. Google the obvious, DL and Rolex and original link can be found.
