Does anybody have any remedies for head aches? I get them a couple times a day.

I try to keep hydrated and relaxed. I am always writing songs and things and think the flux is strong then goes back to normal which could possibly give me the headache, or maybe I get to up tight I'm not really sure. Any ideas? Tyyy

    Stay hydrated.

Maybe you spend too much time looking at a computer screen, maybe your neck and shoulders could be in a strained tense position while writing, might be because of too much caffeine in drinks such as Coke or coffee, could be one or more of a number of causes.

Keep a window open for a fresh flow of air in the room.
  • Try an advil. But don't take them ALL the time to give the kidneys a rest some of the time.
  • I was going to say that, Jeff. Ibuprofen and coffee.

Avoid drugs if you can find another solution, because they can become addictive or cause other problems....for example I get an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen and come out in a rash.

sometimes headaches are caused by an increase in blood flow, so to rectify this, it can be helpful to put ice (with a cloth barrier, never on bare skin) on your neck/head also. if you have a lot of tension in your neck, it could be that the tissues are too tight and have restricted the usual flow of blood. stretch and massage your neck as much as you can. give yourself a head massage around the location that you feel tension as well.

you mention that they happen when you are writing... what position are you in when doing this? bent over a desk, perhaps? it could be that you are putting yourself in an uncomfortable position that is having an ill effect on your body.

and as others have said... hydration is very important!

Do you wake up in the morning with a headache? If so, it could be a sign of sleep apnea; reduced oxygen to the brain caused by apnea can cause morning headaches.
Frequent headaches can also be caused by thyroid disease. Or eyestrain or poor posture at the computer, like Dazzle said. Have you discussed this with your doc? Do you have a doc?
  • Hi W. 2 things were already mentioned: Fresh air, enough water. 2 things can be checked: Balanced nutrition, physical exercise. Otherwise, see the doc. :eek2:

You strike me as an over-thinker. Consider some simple breathing when you notice your mind zipping along. :)

My cure for headaches (I used to get migraines) is to put headphones and crank Metallica up as loud as I can take it... My headaches were usually gone in 10 - 15 minutes... I find it relaxing like some might find motzart relaxing... It is possible the headache leaving was my minds way of saying "you win... I've had enough..." Its hard to say... It worked like a charm

It's not something as simple as needing an eye test, is it?
    or possible diabetes?

Any "natural" cure for headaches I could give you won't work if done on a daily basis. You need to figure out the root cause of the chronic headaches. But FYI, if you're not a coffee drinker or caffeine user, coffee works. So does 85% or higher cacao-content chocolate. If you drink coffee or caffeinated tea (black tea) on a regular basis, caffeine probably won't work, because your body is habituated to it (the receptors are dulled to it).

  • reflexology.
pull you thumbs hard repeatedly for a few minutes.
    deep abdominal breathing.
  • Somehow I just can't imagine Johnathan blasting Metallica. I know, off topic.

Neat. Cures headaches, but makes you profoundly deaf. Still, a small price to pay, no doubt......

I grew up (teen years) in a community where I didn't belong... Listening to metal was a way to fit in... I hated it at first... love it now... I don't listen to much else... But I do love classical as well...

As for the OP, I also find some pressure points that are effective in relieving headaches.

    1) Find and massage your temples. Your temples are located on the sides of your head, at eyebrow level. To find them, touch the end of each of your eyebrows with your thumbs, and then move your thumbs about 1/2 inch toward the back of your head. Stop there and press gently. Using your thumbs, massage both temples simultaneously, using small, counterclockwise motions. The movements should be light.

    2) Two pressure points are located at the inside ends of the eyebrows, right above the bridge of the nose. Do not just press into these areas as this might cause an overwhelming feeling. Using your index fingers, gently massage these areas.

    3) Place your thumbs on the sides of your spinal column on the back of your neck where the neck meets the base of the skull. Tilt your head back gently and press upward into your neck for two minutes. Take deep breaths. If this is uncomfortable, sit in a chair and bend over, propping your elbows on a table or desk. Press your thumbs into the base of your skull on the sides of your spinal column and tilt your head back.

    4) In the webbing between the thumb and your index finger is a pressure point located close to the bone in that area, not in the center of the webbing. Use your thumb and index finger to squeeze the point on your opposite hand. If you are doing it properly, you will feel the nerve beneath the skin and some pressure as you squeeze.

    5) In the space between the big toe and second toe is a pressure point. Use your thumb to apply pressure to the top of this spot.
  • This is what I do: find a medication which works. "Excedrin Migraine" works for me.

Get a ____PILL CRUSHER____ and turn the pills into finest possible powder. Pour in water and stir with a little power mixer if you have one. Take a deep breath, then "slam" or "guzzle" it down fast. Immediately rinse mouth with fresh water to avoid aftertaste.

    Works very fast!

My headache is under control in ten minutes compared to a half hour.

    Try it. Way to Go

Good tip about crushing the pills so they're absorbed faster, Roger. But still, someone can't live on that everyday. That's no way to live. And the meds will lose their effectiveness if used daily, and can cause other problems, side-effects. Get thee to a doctor, Free.

One more suggestion: try biofeedback, if you have insurance that'll pay for it. The headaches may be caused by shoulder tension.

Awww Geez. Good point c_w! I should have realized the frequency of headaches is the issue for the OP. Not good. Gotta get to the cause since medication shouldn't be long term.

I read something somewhere about carefully and systematically eliminating certain suspect foods and salt and other stuff from the diet over time. This in an effort to possibly isolate the cause. "Free" (the OP) probably already knows this.

    "eliminating certain suspect foods..."

Good point. Headaches can be due to subtle food allergies. Gluten, dairy products and eggs can be culprits. But almost anything can. Anyway, Free, you have a list of ideas to follow up on.
  • I found the The Headache Prevention Cookbook by David and Laura Marks helpful in sorting out food triggers for my headaches. If you suspect foods might be the cause, you may want to check it out.
  • Nothing much I can add that hasn't already been said.....maybe try some essential oils....mix together a drop of lavender oil , a drop of peppermint oil, and a drop of marjorm oil or rosemary oil. mix together and rub into temples or where on the head the pain is (back, side front etc:) and of course, drink lots of water! x

If I may say so, this is an extremely dangerous piece of advice.
medications are made to be soluble at different rates for very good reasons, Entry into the bloodstream is calculated and measured, and some medications, particularly those for cardiac problems, are very carefully produced to release the effective drugs into the system over a period of time.
There was a report a while back of a man dying prematurely of the drugs he was taking, because he had difficulty swallowing, and his daughter crushed his pills for him.
    it's what killed him.
