The context of the OP was simply if you could, what would you do? Not the mechanics of how. :)
Right. If you did reach Enlightenment (could happen anytime, even in the later years, before death), and you had the choice to return or not return, what would you do? Interesting that the Buddha chose not to return.

"The Buddha chose his most skillful path."

I wonder if removing himself from the cycle helped set up the conditions for his teachings to increase in potency.

  • why are you so certain that The Buddha didn't returned? why do you assume that if returning, he will have returned to the same planet?

If it truly is possible to come back, why wouldn't the Buddha have come back? Think about that long and hard. :)
How can anyone know that he hasn't or won't if he hasn't already? :)

  • To the OP, I would definitely take the "selfish" path and not be reborn again.

"Returning" implies going back to the same place. If he went someplace else, he wouldn't be returning.

Speaking of the same planet. :)

I tought returning meant "to samsara"... but it makes sense, since non-returner (anagami) refers to this planet.

It's quite possible that he DID come back. ;-)
