    A very beautiful song....

    Happiness Runs by Donovan

    Little pebble upon the sand
Now you're lying here in my hand,
How many years have you been here ?
    Little human upon the sand
    >From where I'm lying here in your hand,
You to me are but a passing breeze.
The sun will always shine where you stand
    Depending in which land
    You may find yourself.
Now you have my blessing, go your way.
Happiness runs in a circular motion
Thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything anyway,
You can have everything if you let yourself be.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs free
Happiness runs in a circular motion
Thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything anyway,
You can have everything if you let yourself be.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Happiness runs, happiness runs.
    Why ? Because.
    Why ? Because.
    Why ? Because.
    Why ? Because.
Happiness runs in a circular motion
Thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything anyway,
You can have everything if you let yourself be.
You can have everything if you let yourself be.
You can have everything if you let yourself be.

I haven't even thought about this song in years, but as soon as I saw the title, I started singing the refrain. :-)

Exactly. How can you be compassive with the nasty hole?
Love and compassion must be earned, for the sake of life's balanced pole.
Cool neutrality IS legit there. Parasites are usually not recoverable. Those which are, will ultimately cope, and morph into something else. You do not heal them with compassion, though. A paradox.

So silence or shear neutrality may as well be compassive. I do not pat self-pity. Is this compassive?

    Moonshadow by Cat Stevens

I'm being followed by a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
Leaping and hopping on a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
And if I ever lost my hands
Lose my plough, lose my land
Oh, if I ever lose my hands- Oh, if...
I wont have to work no more
And if I ever lose my eyes
If my colours all run dry
And if I ever lose my eyes - Oh,
I won't have to cry no more
Yes, I'm being followed by a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
Leaping and hopping on a moonshadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
And if I ever lose my legs
    I won't moan and I won't beg
Oh if I ever lose my legs- Oh if...
I won't have to walk no more
And if I ever lose my mouth
All my teeth, north and south
Yes, if I ever lose my mouth- Oh if...
    I won't have to talk...
Did it take long to find me
    I ask the faithful light
Did it take long to find me
And are you going to stay the night
I'm being followed by a moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow
    Moon shadow moon shadow

<!-- END OF RINGTONE 1 --> "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day"

Meanwhile back in the year One --- when you belonged to no-one ---
you didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
`Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society ---
one day you'll wake up in the Present Day ---
a million generations removed from expectations
of being who you really want to be.

    Skating away ---
    skating away ---
skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

So as you push off from the shore,
won't you turn your head once more --- and make your peace with everyone?
For those who choose to stay,
will live just one more day ---
to do the things they should have done.
And as you cross the wilderness, spinning in your emptiness:
you feel you have to pray.
    Looking for a sign
that the Universal Mind (!) has written you into the Passion Play.

Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

And as you cross the circle line, the ice-wall creaks behind ---
you're a rabbit on the run.
And the silver splinters fly in the corner of your eye ---
    shining in the setting sun.
Well, do you ever get the feeling that the story's
too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage, and it seems like
you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

    Radiohead - Just

    Can't get the stink off
It's been hanging round for days
    Comes like a comet
Suckered you, but not your friends
One day he'll get to you
And teach you how to be a holy cow

You do it to yourself, you do
    And that's what really hurts
'Cause you do it to yourself
Just you, you and no-one else
    You do it to yourself
    You do it to yourself

    Don't get my sympathy
    Hanging out the 15th floor
You've changed the locks three times
He still comes reeling through the door
    One day I'll get you
And teach you how to get to purest hell

You do it to yourself, you do
    And that's what really hurts
It's that you do it to yourself
Just you, you and no-one else
    You do it to yourself
    You do it to yourself

You do it to yourself, you do
    and that's what really hurts
It's that you do it to yourself
Just you, you and no-one else
    You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself, yourself, yourself.

I have a few, which are always in rotation on my music player.

    Never Again, by Asia:

I saw the universe, I held it in my hand
The planets and the stars, merely grains of sand
The darkness that I knew is no more
The sun will shine for me, of that I can be sure

This is the day, the day of my ascendance
A time for life, a time for independence

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother's son

The age of Gemini, a dazzling creation
A new enlightenment, a great illumination
Dark acts of history must never be repeated
I know I must treat you, the way that I'd be treated

This is the day, the day of liberation
A time for life, for new regeneration

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother's son

I'm climbing now, I'm gaining altitude
And now my hands can feel the grip
My head is spinning with a synergy
The power that takes me up and up

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother's son

    Days Like These, by Asia:

    The sun was shining
    The sky was crying
    It just tore apart
    And down came the rain

    And I was soaking
    Yeah I was freezing
    But I was feeling
    No kind of pain

    Come a fireball
I held it in my hand
    You see before you
    A man who's known greatness

    I had a vision
    A revelation
I took a look inside of me
    And I am a sensation

Days like these I feel like I can change the world [repeat]

    It's either easy
    Or it's impossible
And if you ain't got it
You ain't never gonna get it

    But once you find it
    You gotta grab it
    Reach down your own throat
And yank it to the surface

    That may be brutal
    May be gory
    But whatever else it is
    It's my story

    And I believe it
    Yeah, I can see it
I sing it out, shout it out
    Gimme death or glory

    [Chorus]

Days like these, days like these
I think I'll move a mountain or two
Days like these, days like these
Anything you want you know I'll get it for you

    The sun was shining
    I was crying
    I saw a thousand people
    Singing in the rain

    And I was thinking
    About the Indians
And how they say true wisdom
    Only comes from pain

    Come a rumbling
    Humbling feeling
    Like things will never
    Ever be the same

    But what doesn't kill you
    Only makes you stronger
    Today I'm strong enough
And anyway, I love the rain

We Believe, by Queen + Paul Rodgers:

I believe there's no evil out there we didn't have a hand in
You believe it's a time for peace and a time for understanding
Some of us believe that we are chosen
And if God is on our side we'll win the game
And some of us believe that there's a heaven
When the trumpets sound and the judges call your name
    But let's get it straight

I believe there's just once chance in this world to hear our brothers
You believe there's a better way to listen to each other
We don't get what the other guy is saying
We hear the words but we don't understand
So around the world the same old anger raging
And we all cry for shame and the same old tragedy goes down

We believe there's a better way to fight
There's a way to make our children safe at night
We believe there's a war we could be winning
But the only way to win it is to give what we need to receive

I believe we need a hero to step boldly from the shadows
You believe there must be someone on the scene that fits the bill
A man or a woman who knows how to say I'm sorry
With courage in his heart to match his creed
A leader who can build a brand new morning
And match the tide of changes
Match the intent with the deed

We believe there's a deed of obligation
    To bring reconciliation
To make peace with every nation - in our time
We believe there's not a minute we should be wasting
When the darkness falls it's too late to fix the crime
    It's peace that we need

Every father every mother knows the meaning
Human treasure that our leaders do forget
And the bullets fly in the face of common reason
And the pain we give is the legacy in the end we get

We believe there's a song that's worth the singing
    It's a song of truth we're bringing
There's a way to share the Earth with everyone
We believe every creature has a being
Has a right to respect and feeling
To live and breathe and flourish in the sun

    That's what we believe

If this life is driving you to drink
Sitting round what's the use what to think
    Well I've got some consolation
Give it to you if I might
You know I don't worry about a thing because
    Nothing's gonna turn out right

Well this world's just one big troubled spot
Some have plenty, some have not
I've used to be troubled but
    I finally saw the light
Now I don't worry about a thing because I know
    Nothing's gonna be alright

You spend your time trying to be the big winner
The minute you'll get fat somebody else will get thinner
There's always somebody messing with dynamite
You know I don't worry about a thing because I know
    Nothing's gonna turn out right

Sorry about not offering a Buddhist tune myself, but lately I've come to the realization that I just don't believe in anything like samsara. I believe in something more like providence and the Lord's Grace. I'm not so sure that the Buddha was all that much into the then-prevailing notion of samsara himself.

Well here goes my take on the Buddha's message in a song. It's a hymn by John Bunyan of Pilgrim's Progress fame. It has Christian cosmology in it which isn't a perfect fit, but nevertheless is about our Pilgrim Path here on Earth to a Truer Place and not to stop until the goal is reached, to use the words of Swami Vivekanandaji. Of course, you can visualize Buddha as the master and the Spirit as the breaths you take (in Greek spirit=breath).

Here it is sung by a young man with a guitar to the tune of Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZlPy9HpOyc

Here are the words if you care to follow along:

Simon Pilgrim, this one's for You:

He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster,

Let him in constancy follow the Master.

There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent

His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.

Who so beset him round with dismal stories

Do but themselves confound - his strength the more is.

No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight,

He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.

Since, Lord, with Thy Spirit Thou dost defend,

We know we shall inherit life in the end, in the end…

Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say,

Yes, I’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.

Thank you, Nirvy - and for the PM directing me here: so many new posts each day that I might have missed it.

I have been singing this hymn since childhood. It was the first real 'tune' that I managed to whistle and still sing it, when washing up or wandering along the canal towpath. It is particularly useful when I am being attacked by the Black Dog: "then fancies flee away..."

Becaue Nirvy has given us a link to a modern version, you may also like to try one that is very dear to me because Maddy Prior came to our little town to launch this cd. It was the last gig my late wife and I went to together:
    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cOPW-9mSw8Y?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cOPW-9mSw8Y?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

As for John Bunyan's Pligrim's Progress, I can't count the number of times I have read it. It would be my 'desert island' book, for the beauty of the langiage and the power of its allegory. It is the English equivalent of Dante, without all the Italian grossness!

Learning to read it as a true non-conformist is a lesson in 'inclusive hermeneutics' which permits all inspirational texts, music, dance, architecture and ritual to be perceived as signposts along the pilgrim way.

You say you don't like what your country's about (yeah)
    Ain't you deep
    In your semi-first class seat
You picket this and protest that
    And eat yourself fat
    Ain't you deep
    In your semi-first class seat

If you don't like the effect
    Don't produce the cause
    (x4)

You say you don't like what your country's about (yeah)
    Ain't you deep
    In your semi-first class seat
You picket this and protest that
    And eat yourself fat

    Ain't you deep
    In your semi-first class seat
La la la la-la, la la la la

[Speaking of] John Bunyan's Pligrim's Progress, I can't count the number of times I have read it.

Thanks for the Maddy Prior, Simon Pilgrim. It's a terrific CD which I play a few times a year, BTW. The St. Dunstan's hymn tune that Prior employs has always been my favorite, but her rendition of the Village Band type approaches the ecstatic.

    Ah, to be a Pilgrim!

How good to know that you like Maddy too, Nirvy. It was very exciting to meet her, having been a 'fan' ever since her days with Steeleye Span. I still have that first album, on vinyl. She is, of course, a Leveller and living proof that we can still be sexy after 60.

What Bubyan said to me, when I was starting out aged 13 or 14, is that we can all be pilgrims if we make our life our pilgrimage.

BTW (and slightly off-topic) have you ever come across a duo called Mr Fox?

    Police:

Don't stand so close to me:
    Subtle aversion

    Every step you take:
    Mindfulness

The second one's good as it gets stuck in your mind and reminds you of mindfulness.

No more come to mind at the moment.

    Cheers, WK

Haven't seen the Mr. Fox Duo, Simon Pilgrim. Are they in the UK?

I know I posted this link on another thread, but it's in the Members Only thread. I think it relates to the Message of compassion, for the first principle of compassion is that all others are beautiful and worthy of our care, respect, and charity.

It features more than 10 seconds of HHDL "wearing" a Beautiful People button, to go with Melanie Safka's Beautiful People.

    (Lyrics Below.)

To me, this song sums up the flowering of the 1970s at Woodstock. The seventies were a happy time in which the battles of the 40s, 50s, and 60s finally bore happy fruit. Please be sure to visit the above link, repeated again here.

    LYRICS:

Beautiful people, You live in the same world as I do
But somehow I never noticed You before today
    — I'm ashamed to say

Beautiful people, We share the same back door
And it isn't right We never met before
But then, We may never meet again
If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me,
I would run and take all your hands
And I'd gather everyone together for a day
And when we're gathered I'll pass buttons out that say, "Beautiful People."
Then you'll never be alone 'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
    — Include him in everything you do.

Beautiful people, You ride the same subway
As I do every morning. That's got to tell you something.
We got so much in common. I go the same direction that you do
So if you take care of me, Maybe I'll take care of you

Beautiful people, You look like friends of mine
And it's about time That someone said it here and now
I make a vow that some time, somehow I'll have a meeting
Invite everyone you know. I'll pass out buttons
For the ones who come to show.

Beautiful people Never have to be alone
    'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include him in everything you do
He may be sitting right next to you
He maybe be a beautiful people too
And if you take care of him
Maybe he'll take care of you
And if you take care of him
Maybe he'll take care of you ...

    Melanie concludes:
Cuz all of the beautiful people do
And I'm a beautiful people, too.

    Nirvy,

Here is a link to a Mr Fox song. They were a duo of Bob and Carole Pegg - great names in the English folk scene.

I have never been able to be appreciate Steeleye Span's music - despite many attempts by genuine people to share with me the genre and appeal ... now that I am ( rapidly it seems !!) approaching 50, which will soon be 60 if I have the opportunity, maybe this is the connection that has been been alluded to for me - lol

"The Never-Ending Why" by indie band Placebo is often introduced at live shows as "a Buddhist song"; according to the band, it's about accepting that we may never know the answers to some things, that the journey of life is more important to concentrate on than the destination.

It puts me in mind of the Buddha's story of the man shot with a poisoned arrow who will die if he wants all his questions about the arrow answered before he (or another) pulls it out...

    The atom will implode
    The fragile kingdom fold
    The tremor becomes a quake
And there's a body in the lake
And as the two of us rebel
And damn you all to hell
I wonder: is this all there is?

    Time will help you through
But it doesn't have the time
To give you all the answers
    To the never-ending why

As the sound of silence grows
As the spider's kiss is laid
    The tumour becomes malign
But the kids are doing fine
And as the two of us rebel
And damn you all to hell
I wonder: is this all there is?

    Time will help you through
But it doesn't have the time
To give you all the answers
    To the never-ending why

According to the art team that made the video: "the narrative stars a silhouetted couple trying to escape time-shifting neo-Tibetan monsters, all set against a surreally decorated set."

Cause the word out on the street is you are starvingDon’t let yourself grow hungry nowDon’t let yourself grow coldFox in the snowGirl in the snow, where will you goTo find someone that will do? To tell someone all the truth before it kills youThey listen to your crazy laughBefore you hang a rightAnd disappear from sightWhat do they know anyway? System of a Down - Arials

    Life is a waterfall
We’re one in the river, and one again after the fall
Swimming through the void we hear the word
We lose ourselves, but we find it all....

Cause we are the ones that want to play
    Always want to go
But you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
    Always want to play
But you never want to lose

    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life

Life is a waterfall, we drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls
Swimming through the void we hear the word
We lose ourselves but we find it all...

Cause we are the ones that want to play
    Always want to go
But you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
    Always want to play
But you never want to lose

    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life
    Aerials, so up high
When you free your eyes eternal prize
    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life
    Aerials, so up high
When you free your eyes eternal prize

The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows

    Turn off your mind, relax
    and float down stream
    It is not dying
    It is not dying

    Lay down all thought
    Surrender to the void
    It is shining
    It is shining

    That you may see
    The meaning of within
    It is being
    It is being

    That love is all
    And love is everyone
    It is knowing
    It is knowing

    That ignorance and hate
    May mourn the dead
    It is believing
    It is believing

    But listen to the
    color of your dreams
    It is not living
    It is not living

    Or play the game
    existence to the end
    Of the beginning
    Of the beginning
    Of the beginning
    Of the beginning
    Of the beginning
    Of the beginning

I want it now I want it now not

the promises of what tomorrow brings

I need to live in dreams today

I'm tired of the song that sorrow sings

I want more than I can get just

trying to trying to trying to forget

I walk to you through winds of fire

and never let you know the way I feel

Under skin is where I hide love

that always gets me on my knees

I want more than I can get just

trying to trying to trying to forget

Nothing ever lasts forever nothing ever lasts

    forever nothing ever lasts

    forever nothing ever lasts forever

I want it now I want it now don’t

tell me that my ship is coming in

Nothing comes to those who wait

times running out before you're running in

I want more than I can get just

trying to trying to trying to forget

Nothing ever lasts forever nothing ever lasts

    forever nothing ever lasts

    forever nothing ever lasts forever

All the meadows and the fields are coming

to you all the meadows and

the fields are coming to you

    All the meadows and the

    fields are coming to you
