Joining a meditation centre

Well I am joining a meditation centre (the closest thing my country has to Buddhist temples or schools). I am new to Buddhism and I am worried about doing or saying something that will offend everybody else there. Can you give me any tips?

How can you do or say anything offensive if you're just sitting and silently meditating? What country are you in?

Just use commonsense and be on your best behaviour. Sit back and observe things for a while in order to get a feel for the group and their way of doing things.

If you don't feel comfortable after a few visits, it might be better to find another group. If, however, you feel relatively comfortable practicing with them, you'll probably get a feel for the group and what is or isn't appropriate naturally; but when in doubt, just do what everyone else is doing (although if it's in the Thai tradition, one tip is to not point your feet at the teacher or any statues of the Buddha).

Good for you DITM! Don't worry, they will be delighted to see you and happy to show you the ropes.

Just keep your eyes open. If you don't know, just do what the other guy does.

I don't think you'll have to swallow any gold fish until Thursday. (joke)

    Best wishes.
  • Great tips! Very funny @genkaku your sure that's a joke? (Kidding).
