Is this some sort of scam!? or is he the real Buddha Maitreya?

    It's easy enough to say if someone is Buddha Maitreya.

    Each "Buddha" discovers what is not known to the world, masters it, and expounds it to others. If we know of a Buddha, of a Buddha's teachings (and we do... Siddhartha Gautama), then the knowledge exists in the world. Maitreya can not.

    There can be no Buddha Miatreya so long as we know a Buddha Maitreya is coming. To look for one or expect one defies everything a Buddha represents.

    because if he was anything special, I'm sure he would have said something by now.
    Otherwise, what has he done to provide evidence of that?

    Scam.

    Buddha Maitreya appears after all traces of Buddha shakyamuni's Dharma has disappeared from the world and at least a few thousand years after that Maitreya shall be born.

    Recognized Incarnations of certain Bodhisattva's are a different thing and they have to have the recognition of certain authentic practitioners within such traditions.

    avoid the crack pots and self proclaimed saviours/new age junk shop religionists who throw in Dharma with Jesus and the crystal healing terma's of ancient Atlantis.

    Yes, proclaiming oneself or having your followers proclaim you the Maitreya is common among cults. There's always a handful of them kicking around at any one time.

    The Maitreya is not the same thing as the Christian Messiah in form or function. For one thing, the prophesy indicates as @caznamyaw says, that by the time a Maitreya appears, nobody will have any idea of what Buddhism or Buddha or a Maitreya is. The Dharma is the teachings of Buddhism. As long as Buddhism exists, the Dharma exists.
