I CAN NOT find a career I want to do, anybody have any good ideas for a method?

A method to help me find a career I can work at? How did you find something you enjoyed?

Find your wounds that you want to heal in this world
    and heal them.
Find your gifts that you want to give to this world
    and give them.
    Nothing else matters.
  • No one person is perfectly matched to any one job or career.

Try to find what you are good at (which are often the same things that you enjoy), then try working in a field where those skills are important.

It's good to work in an area that you enjoy, because then you are more likely to woork hard/practice, which means you'll improve, which means you'll do well, which is rewarding (financially, but also more importantly, psychologically).

    Good luck

  • you could try voluntary work in your spare time? Charity shops, schools, hospitals, local businesses and animal shelters will all welcome volunteers, and all have very different careers attached to them, and voluntary work is great for both experience and appearance to potential employers/trainers.

Failing that, for example if you work every hour under the sun, or you cannot afford to do a few hours free, you can apply for a job in a potential setting and have a look around get a feel for it, take the job if offered and find out what it really entails and keep switching careers until one sticks.

TBH I always wanted to be either a doctor or psychiatrist. I have been working in a special school just under a year now, and never want to leave. (will start teacher training sometimes next year hopefully!). So although I am not working where I expected to be, I have found a career that is great for me (when I' not home being ill :( ).

Good luck, it takes time to find whats right, and maybe a trip to college/work based training.

There are some good questionnaires online, some of them free, where you put in your interests or answer lots of question s about your personality, and it gives you a list of 10 or 20 jobs you might like.
    It's a start.
For myself, I made a list of things I like doing in my normal life, and tried to see if there was a job that had those things in it.
I like beaches, knowledge, reading, chatting to people, nature, wildlife, science, the outdoors. ..
And now I'm a tour guide, which has all those things. Win!
  • If someone needs a favor (help painting a garage, help sorting out the finances of the local tennis club) offer to help. If you find that what you're offering is also enjoyable to you, consider turning it into your profession.
  • Be quiet, meditate, and listen to the little voice in the back of your skull. It knows stuff. It took me a *long* time to start listening to that voice. And before I did, I kept trying things and getting smacked down again and again by the universe.

Don't be afraid to try and fail though.

I have the same problem. I don't know what I want, but I do know what I don't want. It's killing me. I have no money. Everywhere I look I see meaningless sales jobs in one form or another. I see people around me moving on and finding their vocation. :(

If you had all the money and time you want,
    what would you do?
    That is your vocation.

I would need to have money and time first, to be free enough to explore what I want to do :)
  • @Jill nice and simple yet great advice. Thanks a lot all
  • Weird Artist had a good idea, about trying different volunteer work. It would let you try different jobs on for size, and also, sometimes volunteer work leads to paying positions.

Some people recommend the book, "What Color Is Your Parachute?". I think it has questionnaires, and a lot of food for thought.

Go to your local community college and pick up a course catalog. See if any vocational training they offer sounds interesting.
  • sadly it isn't the career or job itself that gives true satisfaction or enjoyment.

even though at times it can, but you're going to have to deal with the "other" stuff. so even if you enjoy say your job, you're going to have to deal with people, politics, paperwork, etc. the "other" stuff.

and even if you enjoy your job, you have to understand the joy comes from you.

thus i always say to people. if you find peace of mind within yourself then whatever job or condition or situation you are in ... you will be fine and content.

you don't know what to do because you don't know who or what you are. but many of us get by and try things. thus you have many people who are suffering because of their original ignorance.

i teach middle school kids art. i love it, but the love isn't coming from the job itself. it is my mind and how i conduct myself within the work. i have good and bad days. the work itself doesn't define me. i could be washing dishes for all i care. all i valuable and done with the same mind.

whatever is done do it with everything you have. give it your 100%.

then whatever you do, you will have a good day.

Maybe just find a decent paying job that doesn't suck and pays enough and look to other things in life to give you meaning and satisfaction.
