Autobiographies/memoirs of western buddhists?

edited October 2011 in Arts & Writings
Any suggestions? I am curious about how other long time buddhists of attainment have integrated the path into their life as westerners... As I say this I'm wondering how much of a part the generation gap may play between an older buddhist and myself for my purposes here of benefitting from their experience but I would still appreciate suggestions.

  • It’s not the hallelujah-story one might expect, but actually I think this is a nice book on integrating attainment in life.
“After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path” Jack Kornfield.

I quite liked Breaking Free by Srimala, although it's probably more of a autobiog aimed at females.
  • Pema Chodron is great.

I really enjoyed "Crooked Cucumber", the biography of Shunryu Suzuki by David Chadwick. Not exactly what you may be looking for, but has a lot to say about the Westernization of Zen Buddhism. Plus, very well written (I found it hard to put down).
  • @zenff Jack Kornfield, He is such a good talker, I always feel so much calm and relaxed just by listening to him.
  • "Dreaming Me" Janice Dean Williams is very good.
