Karma Questions?

Is it true that
Once one has attained liberation one does not generate any further karma

What happens to the Karma that is still present?

Thank you again

  • To say either you have or do not have karma is to already go wrong.

Karma is intentional action. When you stop moving, where does the movement go to?

Very good question. I've read here that the karmic fruition of negative actions that has already been generated (in past lives, presumably) could still play itself out. But an enlightened one would deal with it skilfully.

But I'm no expert. I await other informed responses. Thanks for a good question.

"Karma" is a short-hand, Cino, for, like I said, the fruition of the consequences of past actions. Let's not make the question too complicated, especially if leah is a newbie.

I suggest listening to this series of talks to get a better understanding kamma/karma.

  • The dalai lama stated in a book I read that even the arya (liberated supreme formless beings) tend to be influenced by past karma and still generate karma in the present. So I would say that yes, but I am not enlightened so..

I'm not entirely sure but with liberation the cause for further birth ceases so there wouldn't be the necessary conditions for any still existing karma to ripen once that person dies.
  • In the passage I read, the dalai lama spoke about how it is possible to transcend this human existence to that of the arya, and yet after a period of time become reborn again due to past karma rippening.

An arya being isn't necessarily an enlightened being. God realms are considered to be one of the 6 realms of existence. You're right that even though these lives are said to be one of extreme pleasure and devoid of suffering, eventually they come to an end and one has to spend time in the lower realms. To your previous post: a supreme formless being isn't liberated they are just a being who generated the positive karma to be born in the peak of samsaric existence. The karma for these states is said to be gained through absorbtion in one of the 4 brahma-viharas, love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
  • When an arhat dies, its all over.
Before he dies, the past karma still affects him.
Buddha still suffered physical pain due to his past karma
    prior to his death.
  • Our karma is of a very human kind.

this enlightened master, was a prince of Parthia, travelled to China. he had translated thirty-five texts from the Theravada and Mahayana schools of Buddhism, including works on meditation, psychology, and techniques of breath control.he then liberated his past life dharmic friend who was rebirth as a snake diety. according to legend of An Shigao, he repaid his karma of killing twice even as an enlightened beings. :p
