Prayer flags

edited February 2012 in Buddhism Basics
Each person should help others on the path to becoming a Buddha.
Prayer flags are a symbol of this wonderful intention: to help
ourselves as well as others become more compassionate
and open human beings.
When we see prayer flags flapping in the breeze,
we may feel warm and hopeful, knowing good intentions
are being sent out on the wings of air.

Anyone else have prayer flags? :)

  • I don't and didn't know what they are for...thank you for telling me! Do all the different traditions fly them?

The hills around some of the holy sites in Nepal are simply covered in prayer flags.

  • I see them in the areas of Denver and certainly Boulder that are kinda hip and open minded. I also never knew what they were for, maybe now i will get some and put them up.

Don't jump to a conclusion. Prayer flags were often used by certain Indian tribes. For example, go out to Devils Tower in Wyoming, and you will see Indian prayer flags throughout the hike around the landform.

  • ahh more history to it, well I will check it all out before doing up my cool back yard in spring
  • I have some super cute paper ones that are hanging in my altar. I'll see if I can get a photo later as I've moved everything. I got a curio cabinet from my grandfather's estate last year after he died and now it's the best altar I've got! :)

Well Boulder is kinda a hippie town.
I have seen them in Colorado as well, none in Chicago though.

Well...they're not freak flags, but the prayers are for everyone.
    :)
bumped my own thread....from way back.
Hung another strand tonight.......for alot of reasons.
Some known to me. Some not.

While hanging them....it brought reflections and meditations
of the previous times and where that intention came from.

    Keeping this practice going where
I lived before/now really inspired Metta in me
for many years. The physical act and the simple
reminder from then on as I passed by them, has been
inspiring to my effort, to say the least.

They made possible many teachings to all three
of my children. Minutes spent on the front/back porch
that were good to the last drop.....

May all benefit from them and what I have to offer.
    I know....there's no 'I'...hahaha.

we have them, even in our tiny town, a store here sells them. My kids have them in their windows (they were the ones who suggested we get them, and why) and I see them hanging on porches and things all around. I think they are nice, and I can't help but smile when I see them and think of kindred spirits.
