What will we be able to do in 100 million years?

edited February 2012 in General Banter
Clarke’s Law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magick.” Think of the progress we have made, technologically speaking, in the past century. Think of the scientific discoveries we have made, and continue to flesh out. Look at the theories of quantum mechanics, or the theory of the holographic nature of the universe. With any study and contemplation at all, it should be clear that the foundation of our understanding of reality is being completely flipped on its head. Despite the incredible amount of progress we have made, the progression we are discussing is progress that was made in a quite short period of time. Combine that with the fact that it is now clear that progress is made exponentially. Progress leads to more progress being made in a shorter period of time. We, as humans, are advancing at a faster and faster rate all the time.

We are progressing so fast now, that most people are simply not keeping up. Most people are way behind the times, in terms of their thinking. Despite the fact that most people are so far behind, we are going to keep progressing more and more, faster and faster. Plain and simple, if people want to be able to hold their own mentally whatsoever as time goes on, they are going to have to change their ways of thinking. If not, the situation could be likened to a caveman trying to function in modern society.

Now, let us reflect on the progress that has been made in the last hundred years. Let us consider the progress that could be made in the next hundred million years, also factoring in what I said about the rate of progression increasing as times goes on, and more progress is made. There are stars in our galaxy that are literally billions of years older than our Sun. It is logical to think that there could be civilizations within those star-systems that are that far ahead of us, technologically speaking. For the time being, though, let us stick with the example of 100 million years, now knowing that there are likely civilizations that are even farther ahead of us than that. With that much time to advance technologically, not to even mention parapsychology, which is a field we are JUST cracking open, the things they would be able to do are absolutely unimaginable.

These advanced intelligences from space could use advanced technologies and parapsychological techniques to observe and influence us at any place and time, without ever having to leave their planet. The energies being utilized for these tasks would be in our air-space, just as our radio-waves are. Combine this with many other intelligences that could be on this planet, whether it be plant/animal intelligence(which we are discovering things that lend itself to these sorts of intelligences being very real, just not yet understood by humanity), or extra-dimensional intelligence. Since reality is just a play of energies, these could be affecting our reality/environment to any degree. My point here is that when discussing extra-terrestrial observation and influence of Earth, we typically assume that they would have to physically be here, and yet when you consider the sort of advancements that would be possible after millions, or billions, of years of our own development, you can see that this is not necessarily the case.

Well, I won't be here then, so I personally couldn't be bothered to speculate one way or another.....

Hopefully the long promised hovercars will be here and maybe? we'll be able to fart gold.
  • wether or not we survive depends on wether or not we become galactic travelers no longer dependent on earthly resources.

The age of technology though is coming to an end... not that we will not have amazing advances ahead of us, but just not at the rate we have witnessed in the last few decades. I think the age of bio-medical advancement is next, where we will witness, or at least our offspring, amazing advances that will change life as we know it.... think of curing all diseases and tampering with the aging process. I hope we are ready for this.
  • You're assuming we'll still be around in 100 million years. I wouldn't bet humans will still be around in 500 years. Sorry to be a party pooper.

I agree, though that the foundation of our view of reality is being stood on its head. It's great--exciting times in that respect. :)

This is a wonderful question! The possibilities are endless!
  • 500 years dakini, make that 200 at the most!
  • 500 years dakini, make that 200 at the most!
Pray for a miracle. :bawl: We've trashed the planet.
  • Hopefully we would have gotten off the rock and colonized other planets, using this planet as a satellite post.
  • If it hadn't been for the dark ages, we would have been further along by now.
  • Let me say that I fully agree with some of you about the importance of our leaving the planet. I have written about this, and plan to write about it more. We have the capabilities to do it now, and it's just getting time where we put that to use, and start actually LEAVING the planet, as in to LIVE off-planet.
  • What will we be able to do in 100 million years?

Flying cars... entire meals will come in pill form... but unfortunately the world will be ruled by damn dirty apes. :(
  • Me? Feed the plants and worms.
  • Hopefully we would have gotten off the rock and colonized other planets, using this planet as a satellite post.
Why, so we can pollute other planets, too?

I think the important thing is to ask where humanity will be spiritually a few thousand years from now, or even a few hundred years from now. Will we still be waging wars and fighting over resources, or will we be more enlightened, living cooperatively, and realizing our highest potential? If we can all get along and live within our ecological means, the rest doesn't matter does it? The important thing is for us all to be content with what we have, living compatibly with each other. That's a vision of the future I could vote for. :)

  • Weakened earth shield, coronal mass ejections, space weather, to name a few. Not all our problems are centered on what is happening on earth. Our solar system and where it is and its projections also affect our planet.

But I do agree that we need to go back to a minimalist approach to resources on earth.

Maybe I am naive, but I have an optimistic view of our future.

we need to listen to more people like David Attenborough, and fewer people like those advocating spending gadgillions of dollars/pounds/euros and [*insert other major currencies here*] on possibilities, when the definites need more investment....

Isn't the world supposed to be ending this year anyway?

Yeah...I hear the only potential survivor will be Mayan Angelou.... :D

I disagree. All we managed to do in the 20th century was find more efficient ways to kill each other and mess up the planet.

Well, it's true to say that Human advances have occurred more quickly in the 19th/20th centuries than at any other time in humanity's history...but i agree with @SpinyNorman here... we've become far more advanced, proficient and effective at wiping each other out in more and more impersonal, yet inhuman ways....
When we used to cut trees down by hand, we'd have time and seasons to re-plant and re-cultivate forests - now we wipe out areas of woodland the size of small countries in a matter of weeks, and deforestation is a dirty word.....

I share your optimism in the long run. In the forseeable future though may I play devil's advocate for a bit.

  • It's about living in the moment... The past is history and future is nothing but a dream.
  • Being that 100 million years is being discussed, you have to factor in evolution, and how that will change things. That is, if the hominid tree survives that long. Will "we" be "we?"
