Baraka the Movie

edited March 2012 in General Banter
No this has nothing to do with the US president. It is a movie I stumbled across whilst living in a guest house last year. It has no spoken words, no script as such and it is shows out species in many different lights. From ancient civilsations, tribes, religions etc. It uses all real footage and usues clever editing and choice of music throughout. I loved it and I advise people if they have the time to give it a looki-loo. It is not for everyone because there is no plot as such, or spoken words or actors, just pure and raw human life. I could not remember the name because there was a thread about animal cruelty and there is a scene with little chicks in it that really is quite shocking to see. Anyway here is the trailer.

thanks @ThailandTom...i took the liberty of putting the 'chick cruelty' in bold/italic, because someone wishing to view the video might either skip your intro, or flit through it and miss that bit.
we have already had to edit the thread with really dreadful carnage scenes, so i felt it fair to give good visible warning....
    EDIT:
Actually, having now watched it - it wasn't so much shocking, as 'sobering'... kind of brings you up short, as you realise what the deal is.....

nice diversity... all on this tiny speck of dust in the cosmos....

but that too has been observed on this forum recently... linking the two together makes it more poignant....?
  • lol again with the poignant :p well the actual movie has the chick scene in more detail. Where the literally fling the chicks into sorting places and burn the beacks blunt etc. But the entire movie is a great watch IMO, it shows our species in all it's diversity and splendor, but also it's folly and wrong doing.

yeah this is a great movie.

our favorite at home, it's very very nice in HD btw.
they were able to convert it to hd even if it's old because of the film they chose to use at the time (70mm).

After a break of 20+ years since Baraka, the director has a new movie called Samsara.
As you can guess from Baraka, the director is a very experienced Buddhist meditator.

Samsara is doing the movie festival tour right now so it should be available in dvd in a year or so.

"The greatest visual experience that my eyeballs have ever witnessed."
we've been waiting for years for this one, cant wait!
  • WOW thanks @patbb I thought there was a buddhist theme to it somewhere (baraka that is). There is that one scene with some sort of religious figure walking step by step with a ting of his bell, each step taken very slowly among the chaotic crowd. I will be sure to watch samsara, thank you :)

I really like the scene with some tribal ceremony in the forest where a bunch of guys are all sitting down in a semi circle, chanting and making arm gestures.

That is quite an extreme scene in contrast to the other scenes in the movie, and plus I 'think' it is all authentic. It really is a good movies showing all cultures and tribes, how we have advanced from the jungles to poor slums to cities etc, there is a moving scene of a poor boy by himself on the street as well that is quite moving.

I kind of looked at the movie overall as the movement of human society from a childlike one to the adult modern life, then at the end it moved back into a spiritually awake world that was similar to the childlike world but wiser.
  • When I watched the movie it did seem as it if progressed from simple tribes etc to societies and cities, and the problems that come with these huge civilastions. That one scene with the guy with his bells, that is quite unique, I will try and dig it out.

  • Here it is, it is truely wonderful.

Yes, I really liked that one as well.

Then as the movie progresse to cities and such it grew at times dark. With the people picking through garbage dumps and the kabuki theater stuff. Then the movie ended with a return to the spiritual and natural stuff.

That is one thing that I noticed, there is a plot in a sense as it shows the progression of human kind from the tribes in the jungle to the primative settlements, slums and major cities. I am looking forward to samsara (never thought I would say that), but I may never have known about it if I did not post about Baraka here.

Samsara is also good, but it is different than Baraka. It is more like a normal movie.

are you talking about Samsara the movie made in 2001?
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0196069/

which is not from the Baraka director.

or Samsara the film (documentary) 2011
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770802/
which is by Ron Fricke and I believe is very similar to Baraka, just more thought out and evolved since Ron spiritual practice must have grown quite a bit in the 20 years between Baraka and Samsara.

Life is cheep when we look at it statistically. It's death by sheer numbers. While our value seems to be diminished collectively, we are often infinitely more important to one another individually. Wonderful meaning in an otherwise cold and indifferent universe.

Philosophical musing aside, if you liked BARAKA, you may also be interested in >Koyaanisqatsi< and a shorter film called >Chronos<, which deals with the monuments of our time and those of the past.

I find them all quite Beautiful, particularly with a decent video/audio setup, but also quite sad, haunting and overwhelming.

The family pets don't seem to mind (and much nicer bumping into love at every turn rather than some imposing statue)
