The Medicine Buddha

edited March 2012 in Buddhism Basics
Hoping you guys can help me out once again in my Buddhism. I have been reading little bits about the Medicine Buddha(Wikipedia). I am ill at the moment and so are family members. To make my practise to him more efficient I was hoping you could give me some advice. I found the Medicane Buddha mantra and its definatly up my alley. I wish to be better, I wish my family members to be better and I am hoping some prayers might help? Or really a change of mind set! Thanks alot!

Some resources that have been of great help to me:

The book "Boundless Healing," by Tulku Thondup. You can get a used copy for as little as $1 plus shipping: http://www.amazon.com/Boundless-Healing-Mediation-Buddhayana-Foundation/dp/1570625743

It's extremely positive, uplifting, inspiring--you don't have to be Buddhist to benefit from it.

The Tibetan Book of Living & Dying is full of beautiful healing meditations, short practices, and encouragement--whether you are working to help yourself, or others, or both. Again, the practices are adaptable for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

For Medicine Buddha practice itself, some of the most amazing teachings I've found are these by Thrangu Rinpoche - worth reading over and over and over:

Here is an earlier NewBuddhist thread with additional Medicine Buddha info and mantras:

And finally, the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive is full of articles and advice on healing practices - here's the "Advice on Health" section:

Many prayers for you, and I hope you will start feeling better soon!

Lately, I have found myself returning to the chanting of the Medicine Buddha mantra. This had been one of my favorite chants to practice.

My daughter, who had become familiar with it as a child, has started chanting it too. She told me today when I gave her a copy of the Sadhana. She has expressed an interest in Buddhism, and had been fond of the Medicine Buddha. I wanted to encourage her so as not to become spiritually empty after moving away from her former spiritual beliefs so that's why I gave it to her.

I had both those issues of Shenpen Osel you linked, and was looking for more material I could share with her, and I found this post on NewBuddhist through Google search.

I have a copy of a CD with a recording of the Medicine Buddha mantra on it that I like very much, and I hope you will like it too.

Wow, Its a small world after all!

I haven't heard of the medicine Buddha. Medicine man, yes. If you are ill physically, it is the doctor you ought to see.
