Need help getting going

edited March 2012 in Buddhism Basics
So I have been reading books, creeping through this site and at one point was really making progress in nonattachment and compassion but somewhere I fell
off the tracks. I don't really know how to start up again. I've forgotten a lot and don't know where to begin practicing. there is just so much information and I'm feeling overwhelmed. not to mention I'm in college and my brain is fried to begin with. But this is something I want ( with a lack of a better word) SO BAD. Buddhism makes sense to me and gives me hope. I would dedicate the rest of my days to it and I plan on it. But I just don't know where to start. for instance meditation. Wherw do I begin? What do I
meditate on? sorry for the rant just feeling a bit frazzled. Advice needed.
With love - Jen

This may sound snarky, but you can start by sitting on a cushion, breathing in and out, and focusing on the inhalation and exhalation; focusing on the "present moment," not thinking about anything in particular.
  • not snarky at all. I appreciate any direction or guidance I receive.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Not snarky at all. Just the ticket, in fact. :)

  • I know its a lot more simple than i am making it but i have a tendancy to over think until i completely defeat myself.
  • Thanks Dakini ^_^. I guess i just need to sit my butt down and meditate. Sometimes it's difficult because i have ADD and bi-polar, also high degrees of anxiety so my mind races like woah.

Try to be patient with yourself. Buddhist knowledge is vast and knowing ourselves takes time and effort. Study and meditate when you can and slowly the effects will take hold. Finding a group of like minded people for support and reinforcement of your practice is also a good idea.
  • I agree, baby steps. I'm a beginner too...I just learned the word 'delusion'...kinda eye opening!

Just follow your heart, it will lead you...don't download them all and thank @maarten he led me there.
  • Yea i would love to find some people nearby. I need to do some more research on the area around me as i am 6 hours away from home. Also the school im going to is quite conservative or as some would say "redneck". Nothing against rednecks but all of the ones i have met so far are very Christian and Catholic so i dont have too much support. Im sure i can find some people though if i look hard enough. Thanks person!! I think i am impatient because i have no one else to look at and say "oh so THAT'S how it works!" I feel very alone
  • Yea the whole dilusion thing is extremely confusing to me as is a lot of the terminology. Well we can be beginners together! haha

@Yacababy -- Try not to get to excited or downcast about your adventures in Buddhism. Buddhism is not a race to some imagined corner office; there are no 'winners' -- there are just people who practice. And a part of that practice is patience. No need to get there (wherever 'there' is) by yesterday.

In a frazzled environment, one in which information overload seems to play a part, meditation is not a bad idea. First of all, you can skip over a lot of the information-tsunami offered in books or lectures. The only thing you need is a bit of determination and ... again... patience.

Perhaps your determination could express itself this way: This evening, as you sit around planning tomorrow's adventures, seek out a half an hour tomorrow during which you will be free. Having discovered this niche in a busy schedule, promise yourself that tomorrow, at 5:37 p.m., you will meditate for 10 minutes ... not more and not less. When 5:37 rolls around, keep your promise. If the toilet breaks or the roof falls in or for some other serious reason you cannot keep your promise, don't make excuses or rattle off explanations. Instead, simply say, "I choose not to meditate." No wussy explanations ... just choose.

If you manage to keep your promise, then, reflect on whatever tomorrow is coming, choose a time that looks open, and promise once more to meditate for 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 or whatever minutes. Keep... your... promise. Not more, not less -- just keep your promise. At the end of a week of such exercising, review your experience. Was it too much? Was it too little? Was it too hard? Reflect ... and then look forward to another tomorrow and make your promise again ... and keep it.

Will you be successful? Will you be a failure? Count on it. But exercise some determination. Whether you succeed or fail, do great meditation or lousy meditation ... just keep your promises. And see what happens.

If you have no chosen practice, here is a site that is from a Zen Buddhist perspective, but is generalized enough so that you can easily filch the basics of seated meditation. It's got pictures.

    Best wishes.
  • We all have roadblocks ...many here have a variety of disorders and on different sides of the same sojourn...think of it as a lifetime degree...with no graduation date. Lol...
  • Thank you @genkaku I bookmarked it, too.

  • Good thread! See you helped us all too!
  • Thanks Genkaku :) I agree i need to practice my patience. I often have free time to myself but find i have trouble getting my butt in gear, a problem that has bothered me for some time. I think tomorrow morning when all is quiet in my suite i will take advantage and begin meditating. Thank you for the site as well ill be sure to check it out. Much appreciated.

@Lady, hah i think this is the one degree i look forward to spending a lifetime earning. CANT WAIT! even though ive already begun i look forward to the days ahead
  • I've read that the only failure in meditation is NOT TRYING. so even bad sittings are considered positive...don't give up!

    Start again, start again!
  • WILL DO! :):) thanks everyone i feel a lot more uplifted now.
