There is this twitter account...

FirstWorldPains

I've found the tweets very very realistic about suffering :)

things that annoy people, that makes them suffer such as:

'I got a new phone and now I have to reinstall all my old apps.'

Beauty...

Comments

  • so much dissatisfaction.
  • well...

    kinda strange...
but it makes me laugh and smile...
    to read this..
makes me remember my vows, and the enourmous...futility of them.

    :)
  • I hate twitter...

What are you doing now in 150 characters or less....

I hate FB...Myspace...Live Journal... Sometimes, I hate this site too..

Just kidding... this site is cool!
  • twitter is awesome...

if you can't say something with few letters and words,

    it's not worth mentioning,

    at all often,

unless you have to translate for others,
    that are 'full'
  • Please!... what is the point of twitter? It's basically an update as to where you are and what you are doing...

Unless you are famous and have fans, what is the point of having it? If you really have to document your life, buy a diary.

I understand that facebook is used by many to be in touch with other...especially family overseas... that's fine.

But mostly, it is a glorified shrine of the EGO... laid bare for all to see. IMO... I think it causes more problems than it's worth... really, i think I like to old fashion way...pick up a phone, and call me.
  • I use it a tool to generate consiousness...

Have a journal too, and I 'work' on forums..

it's only ego if you use it as ego...
it's just a vessel, we're the ones that attribute ego to something,

    not things as they are
  • How do you use it as a tool to generate Counsciousness?
  • retweet zen quotes

    retweet buddhis munks

retweet stuff about life and society

    tweet about buddha, life, philosofy

you can use toilet paper to generate consiousness, scribble a note on it, and leave it somewere, if only ONE person is crazy enough to read it...

    you done it.
  • You can post useful quotes and bits and pieces of information that can help others.

If you are surprised at the places in which you unexpectedly find Buddhism, you might want to consider what the places are where you could possibly NOT find Buddhism.

Now there's a notion that really blows my mind.
  • True dat! I was surprise to know that my neighbor practices buddhism...she's got a buddha shrine outside on her porch.
If you are surprised at the places in which you unexpectedly find Buddhism, you might want to consider what the places are where you could possibly NOT find Buddhism.

Now there's a notion that really blows my mind.
  • here on this forum sometimes. there's no buddhism.
    Fanatics.

you blow your own mind with notions?
  • let me rephase...
my own ego was messing with my reply..

i've learned buddhisme the hard way....never had a sangha. don't care for one really.

so...i've learned to seek in all places and under rocks and in caves and in gazing upon the stars
  • tought me...

    'buddhism'

is life. not 'monk' or 'sutta' or 'monastery'

those are just 'tools' to make you 'see' ....just like twitter LOL
  • Gotcha! I think... but i apreciate the explaination

    in other words:

    it's everywere around us...
    most of it is.
be carefull not to 'blind' yourself by...
rules and such and ruling people in what form whatever.
    They come in all forms.

Most people forget buddha found out HIMSELF.
By destilling what worked and what not. He just translated it in a way that worked for most.

the key is in the precepts, the five I believe,
the first two of the noble truths and the eightfold path.
    Tripple gem.

    That's it.
    For the rest...

    Live

    :)

It's actually a pretty decent place to hear about news and goings-ons as they happen, as lots of people in the West have smartphones and are keen on tweeting stuff.

Tweets also can be more imaginative - linking people you may not even be friends with to information, videos, etc. The hashtag function is pretty good at aggregating information, actually.

Businesses can use Twitter to update their "followers" on new sales, products, etc quickly.

Also, as the Social Media Guy in our band, I find Twitter to be useful for getting our name "out there," although the actual payoff has yet to reveal itself.

But most importantly, I think Twitter gives people a sense of social cohesion. Sort of ironic, I know, given the impersonality of it all. But I guess in an (arguably) secularized world that emphasizes individuality, people want to feel like they're part of something bigger - whether it's a political movement (esp "slacktivism" where you just need to Tweet or "Like" something on FB to feel like you did something) or the world wide web.
I understand that facebook is used by many to be in touch with other...especially family overseas... that's fine.

Everything we do (except meditate I suppose) constructs an identity that we present to the world.

On FB, the user chooses how much he/she puts up for others to see. It can be a "shrine of the EGO" as you put it, or it could just be a simple name, profile picture, and sharing music videos you like.

As for "causing problems," I can only say that you're responsible for your own actions.

Phones are great for close friends, but if I just want to keep in touch with people I'm not necessarily on phone-talking terms with (and even e-mail is considered a bit personal), I think quick messages on FB are useful. You also have the ability to message a group of people, create events for a group of people, etc, whereas phones and even e-mail tend to be messy for that sort of thing.

Hey you're not that much older than me! I think it's just a matter of what one is used to. Although I do think life is simpler without Twitter (I actually hate having to update it for our band, and the character limits really just force you to link people to things since you can't write anything substantial), I do really like Facebook.

I don't see much of a point to twitter... Is it really that different than a facebook status update?

    I do enjoy facebook

  • Oh you're new! Fresh meat! Welcome! I hope you had a chance to do an introduction thread. That would be cool!

@ourself, a Tweet can have hashtags (#buddhism, for example) added to them so that all tweets containing that hashtag can be searched/aggregated and you can view a whole gamut of tweets on the topic. It's actually pretty cool.
