Is the number 17 an unlucky one in Italy? Interesting that they're both prime numbers.

There's stuff out there on precession and astrology linked to the number 12... 13 and in part the 13th zodiac was a metaphor for the hidden master to return - as such it became an esoteric symbol hidden in plain view openly representing the opposite intended meaning - how better to hide something for the ardent explorer?

More recently, the Templar Order was targetted by a global coordinated attack on the night of Friday 13 October 1307 - for the holy army (at that time more affluent and powerful than the King of France), to be destroyed overnight and driven from power to exile was seen as an unexpected reverse in fortune - it kind of stuck...

  • I am sure the talk given by Ajahn Brahm has many good points and is cleverly related to this whole question about friday the 13th. I have watched many of his talks but not this one so I cannot comment.

It was good flying on an international flight on September 11 also, in terms of short cues and getting a flight - it was sad to remember of the many people who died in the US on that day, and I would have thought of that whatever I would have done on that day.

Like others said, bad things, good things, all types of things happen every single moment. It's how you perceive it and how you accept it, or deny it.

As Ajahn Brahm says the problem is that often when it comes to superstition if you believe it , it seems that it works. So if you can't do it or the outlook is seen as negative, it becomes a big problem for you. To use examples from the video, shaking the incense, rubbing the belly of a fat Buddha, believing newspaper astrology reports or leaving shoes outside a temple. So much of what happens in TB is like this ... it is important to know what is important and why. I like ritual, however I am not superstitious.
  • Like the situation with my GF who visited a woman who told her something about her unborn baby she adborted years ago, she was advised to go and perform a ritual to 'let the boy go'. She has had a new sense of attitude and look on life since then, real or not, it works in the mind of her and that is what matters.

I am pleased to hear that your GF was able to let go and move forward. Having an abortion is often not an easy decision to make, especially in the long term and a difficult experience to go through, for many women.
  • Actually last Friday the 13th was a great day for me. Started a new business venture that got off the ground with flying colors :)

Self-fulfilling prophecy. Just like if you believe that all (insert your favorite group, religion, race, or whatever) are (insert favorite epithet), then they are.
