  • I don't trust life.
I trust my capabilities to deal with life.

  • Hi @gracelee

I never used to trust life per se, I guess I was just living it and learning to succeed and do well etc. Until life threw me on my face and the rest as they say is history.

Imbued with the practice of Dharma and the evidences in my own life, I can say there is a deeper trust, an interesting trust, in life -- Life to me is Dharma, there is no distinction and the world works in mysterious ways.

A lot of it is a mystery but I am grateful ultimately.

    Best wishes,
    Abu

Well I think "trust" tends to imply something positive, like giving up your sense of self-preservation to something else. I don't "trust" life in the way that I don't care about anything and think that "life" will just take care of me.

So I'm finding it difficult to answer this question, I'll try to come up with a more extensive reply later.

I have a trust in life that things will work out or that I'll be able to deal with them. I don't have much trust in other people though. Not that its right, its just the way it is for now.

But what if things don't work out, or if you find it's extremely difficult to deal with them? Won't you have an even deeper crisis because you thought you could trust things to work out themselves?

FYI @person, I'm not trying to deconstruct your life or criticize the way you think. I'm just asking because that's how I feel sometimes - I often say "things will work out," but then sometimes I think "What if they don't?" and I'll have some sort of trip because my world-view has been turned upside down.
  • i trust life, bcos i am still alive n healthy.
some of my friends died young.
i have a good friend who has gone mad.
we still havent destroyed the earth with nuclear weapons.
    so, i trust.... life?

Trusting life maybe another way of expressing this “optimism bias”.
It has some good sides (we don’t jump off a cliff being realistically depressed) it has some downsides (we ignore sensible warnings).

Surrender to what is. Think about the word surrender and replicate it through the body and mind.

I'm not sure its completely rational, its just that things have generally worked out for me. For example I am self employed, often I won't have any work scheduled for much more than a couple weeks. Someone usually calls looking for me to do something for them though. Sometimes during the winter I will be totally without work for a while, I know my work is somewhat seasonal so I plan ahead and make sure to keep enough of a cash reserve to tide myself over lean times. So I don't have any good reasons that someone should trust life, experience has just shown me that I generally have good karma. Not that it can't run out at some point.

    What is life?
    What am I trusting exactly?
We all must find our reason for being, whether we consider this life worth living or not.
For me we live life for life itself. Ours is a relative existence, we must find our own meaning in this world and then live it out. There is no ground other than which we create.
  • Your friend is admirable. Not too many people have a positive outlook on life.

I think maybe some of that youthful belief in our invulnerability has remained through the years. I had an accident a couple years ago that left me in the ICU for 10 days, 1 month in a recovery hospital and 10 weeks of at home recovery. This had a deep effect on my sense that everything will always work out, even though now I'm almost entirely back to normal sans a few scars. I am much more aware of how things can change in an instant and don't take the good things so much for granted anymore.
  • Gracelee, you prompted quite a question here. And I find it VERY interesting that I 1) found this string of responses and 2) that the responses are so varied! See, my purpose in life is teaching others *about* Trusting Life. It's what I do. Now, I don't try and convince anyone what they should believe — I simply share what I believe and if it resonates with them, then they come back and read some more, or perhaps come and see me speak if I'm in their area. For the most part, I write for a community of folks who are interested in learning more about Trusting Life, hence the name of my website: TrustLifeToday.com
I'd love to hear more of your thoughts and/or questions on the subject of Trust. Shoot me an email anytime or stop by my site.
    Love, Leslie

    ...or not.
*That* is where I am stuck... cuz if I think it's not worth living, or am not convinced that it is... makes the "finding a reason" part really difficult. Really flippin' difficult. *sigh*

Very good. When I look at life, bad things happen to good people; that's a fact, but having a positive attitude; an "I can deal with it no matter what happens", is hugely helpful.
